ER to OB

After many months and after many more interviews and finding my perfect "home" for OB I finally got the job and will start June 23rd.

I've very excited to take my next step and journey in my life and I feel like I had to take so many steps backwards to get where I'm at.

I've struggled a lot with ER nursing because I never actually enjoyed much about it. I bounced around to several ERs trying to find a place where I fit and it took a long time to realize I wasn't going to fit into the job because I simply did not like it.

Without going into great detail, my first ER job was an easy job for me to get and since then there have been plenty of places to work around me and it worked to pacify me until I was in a position to do something different in life. Ever since I can remember I've wanted to be an OB nurse, so this wasn't something I just thought up one day and said...WOW that would be a great job to have. It simply was not an option when I first graduated from NS in 2006 and honestly wasn't an option until very recently for me.

There are certain parts of ER I have tolerated and parts about I really do enjoy, both of which I know will carry over to OB nursing nicely.

My question is, how does one handle their co-workers when making a move such as mine? Thus far I have gotten very little support from my peers about my job change. :banghead: Most have actually been very rude about it.

I've had a couple who have been very supportive and who tell me I'm going to love it and I'll do very well at it...so that gives me hope there are still nice people in the world :heartbeat

I have zero regrets about following my dream and my desires - I just wish I had some snappy comebacks to give these people.

Any thoughts, ideas, help???????

To complicate matters I've actually been on vacation at my full time job since the "big announcement" about my leaving the ER to go to OB so I haven't see *everyone* yet, so I'm sure there will be more fun things to be said when I go back to work next week. :argue:

Help, please :wink2:

Don't worry about those negative co-workers. You're moving on, they're not. Have no regrets ever. Congrats on your new job.

Specializes in ICU/ER.

I cant think of any "snappy" comeback--but when someone says something negative about you transferring depts just say "thats the great thing about nursing--so many opportunities" or "this is something I always wanted to try-I am excited and think I will like it" no need to defend your decision.

I am excited for you, I always thought I wanted to be an OB nurse. Maybe someday, for now I am very happy in my dept, but that is the great thing about nursing all the opportunities.

Good luck in your new position, I hope you love it and do well!!

Congratulations on your new job. I am so glad someone out there wants to work OB because I know I would hate it. But that is the beauty of nursing. A place for everyone.

Enjoy your new adventure and ignore the naysayers.
