Too fat to nurse in the community?

I recently went for an interview for community nursing. Sadly, i didn't get the job. I had experience (even though it said you didnt need any), i answered all questions put to me by the 8 interviewers!

They kept asking if i was able to do the job as it was physically demanding. I already work on a ward doing 12 hour shifts, and ok, iam over weight but not unable to do my job.

Could this be the reason i didn't get the job, am I too fat to community nurse?

How much do you weigh? How tall are you?

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

You said you went on an interview & you have experience when you didn't need any. I'm thinking perhaps they hired someone without any experience just because it is cheaper to pay them vs. you.

I'm sorry you didn't get the job.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Have you asked for feedback from the interview?

Specializes in ER.

Working a 12 hour shift in a hospital is not the same as working in the community.

District nurses spend a lot of time on their hands and knees tending to leg ulcers, and don't have the luxury of hoists and adjustable beds, so it is tougher physically in that sense.

I know I used to get a lot of knee pain, and I was not overweight, it was just all the time kneeling on hard floors washing feet!

Also there is a liability thing for employers. They have no control over your working environment as you would be in people's homes. That might mean a 14th floor flat where the lift is broken. It might mean a long walk to a city apartment with no parking. Many city trusts prefer their nurses to have bicycles because of the parking issues, and I certainly worked for 4 different trust and never drove a car once.

There should be some Occ Health guidelines in place as to minimal health requirements.

Maybe you're just being too hard on your yourself, specially your physicality. Didn't you just consider the possibility that maybe there are others more qualified because of their years of experience. And you should have asked a feedback as to why were you not hired in order to clear your mind from torturing yourself
