hi I feel really guilty for going off sick for a UTI to make it worse my manager rang me at home and told me o get some barley water and come to work and that it was no reason to go sick I already went to A&E for some antibiotics so I could not go sick but the next day I got worse I couldn't stop shaking and felt worried about even driving my car I went back to the doctors and they gave me some different antibiotics cause I still had the infection after my manager had rang me I couldn't stop crying I rang HR and they said they will speak to her but I feel nervous that I may have made things worse for myself

If you are off sick then the manager has no right to ring you at home and tell you what to do.

Couple of things springs to mind, and i would never condone being told to come to work if they are poorly, i do wonder if your area has a problem with high sick rates, and what your sick record is like.

Your manager does have the right to contact you, generally, if I had a member of staff I was concerned about their level of sickness I would give suggestions on how to stay well, and maybe suggest means of returning to work as quickly as possible.

But XB9S would you tell someone to go to work? I understand people have poor sick records and understand it can cause staffing issues and ringing re when coming back etc but I am not sure if right to tell someone to get back to work that they are not sick

that's just it ive not had a lot of time off only 2 locations in a year

It would depend on the circumstances, if the member of staff was coming up to final stages of a sickness policy I would discuss options with them. Clearly if they really sick and they can't work then, no I wouldn't tell them to get to work, but some staff can have quite a low threshold for not coming in, and if it means they may lose their job as a result of repeated absence I would try to help avoid that.

I was replying directly to silverdragon, not commenting on your particular circumstances, it is difficult to comment without knowing the full story, but on the face of what you say 2 episodes in 12 months isnt a huge cause for concern.

If you are having recurrent problems with UTI then maybe a referral to a t specialist is needed.

That sounds terrible. Sounds like you need to think about moving to another unit. This problem also happens in the US as documented many times on allnurses.com. I'm blessed that my unit doesn't do this.

BabyRN moving wards at the moment in the UK is not easy as there are no jobs to move into. Most people are just having to suck it up.
