American Nursing Student in the UK wanting to do my Elective Placement back in the US

Hi all,

A bit complicated yes! But I want to do my elective placement back in the States. It's a Bs(Honors) program. I'm looking at palliative care/ end of life and would preferably like to be in California, Colorado, or Kentucky. (Mainly, because that's where my family is!)

Any ideas of how I go about starting the process. My university says we have to set up the placements directly however our supervisors will do all the verifications of being legitimate nursing students. As I eventually want to come back home to work I thought this would be a great opportunity for networking. My initial idea was to contact hospices and hospitals directly. Any ideas of where I should begin?

Thanks so much for your advice.

Anyone have any ideas?

IDK is an elective placement the same as an externship? I know that externships are set up by the school that you are going to. I wouldn't even know where to begin with international placement. Also have you looked into what requirements there might be to take the NCLEX in the US? You may have to have your transcripts from your UK school evaluated by a university here before applying to test.

Specializes in ER.

Yes, contact hospices directly, thats pretty much the only way.

But are you aware that being a UK trained RN does not qualify you to work as an RN in the US?

Your training will not meet the requirements for taking NCLEX.
