I'm starting back to school in August. The first semester I will have Psych, peds, and OB; the second semester I will have ICU/ER, and complex nursing (oncology, HIV, and other chronic illness), then my final semester will be management. I have some extra money right now so I want to purchase some supplimental texts to help me along the way. What have or are you guys using to assist you in your studies. I've been looking at the incredibly easy/visual series but wanted other opinions. Thanks guys!:heartbeat

You can't go wrong with Potter and Perry's for your fundamentals. I thought it was an excellent text.

I wouldn't start buying anything until you start running into a problem with a subject. Then, is the time to start spending your money on a good supplemental book that you are going to get some use out of. Hunt down and find a large bookstore that carries a large selection of these books in stock so you can actually look at them before buying. Don't buy anything until you need it and have looked through the pages of the book you are going to buy first.

An exception might be. . .do you have a good medical dictionary?

i too am starting in august but have heard it recommended many times to get a NCLEX review and to do the review workbook right along with the classes from beginning to end. I would get that asap

before deciding on a nclex book look at the ones on the market first. allnurses has a thread on test taking tips for nursing school and there are sites that have practice questions you can access for free. if your nursing textbook has a companion website use it because there are probably nclex type flashcards online. you can also access the online website of other nursing textbooks of elsevier by just registering on their website.

I could not disagree more. For me, this is undoubtedly the worst textbook that I've ever used in any field of study. I find it overly verbose and poorly organized. It seems to go out of its way to take simple subjects and make them complicated. Of 33 reviews on Amazon it rates only 2.5 out of 5. I would rate it a 2 as well.

Biggest waste of money on a text book I've ever had.

I think potter and perry's fundamentals of nursing is an excellent text. There are also study guides that go along with the readings and the best part is that there is a 12 volume cd collection that has videos on it that demonstrate a ton of procedures! It is a great learning tool!

Guys, guys! This is why I wouldn't buy anything yet, have a need before buying and would look something over first before putting down any money. Everyone's needs and tastes are different.

I love supplemental books,a lot of times they are straight to the point and summarize the subject very well without all the unnecessary words :)

If you struggle in math, you should get good math for nurses book.

NCLEX review books are also a good investment,I try to do 30 questions a day,so when the big day comes, I wont have the panic attack and feel somewhat prepared.
