  1. In our program we are not allowed to practice on each other but only on dummies. When I needed more practice with giving injections I usually went to lab in my free time. Also at home you can practice on oranges you just have to buy syringes. I tried to take couple from our lab but the lab tutor didnt allow me to. As far as the inserting IV,we were only allowed to play with the equipment in the lab and then we had to practice on the really people in the hospital.Scary but you will have your instructor walk you through the steps.
  2. Although I'm still a nursing student once when I was in clinical I was taking care of the patient who fall right before he was assigned to me.The doctor who came to assess him explained to me what was he doing to the patient and also answered all my question about bed sores, patients bruises etc.It was really cool that he took the time to explain to me all the medical stuff. But of course there are plenty of stuck up,plain rude doctors or doctors who are quick and brief.
  3. I dint know that nursing was a career for me.Actually I never wanted to be a nurse maybe veterinarian and was drawn more toward languages, history, geography ,psychology subjects. My best friend's father put this idea into my head to be a nurse (I guess he always dreamed of his daughter to become a nurse in white coat:)So my friend bugged to apply to apply nursing school with her (and we were inseparable parrots). However I went into different major of liberal Arts and few years later I decided to go back for my second degree in Nursing and I love it, and looking forward to graduate in May 2009:heartbeat
  4. Ok but in order to correct someone's else grammar the person who attempts to do it should also write grammatically.Do you see the point I'm trying to make?, people make mistakes all the time...perfectionalists,anal people usually live shorter(that is the fact we learned in YES nursing school) I had a A+ in university English and when I write on the internal boards I really dont CARE if I make couple of mistake. By the way I know two languages, how many do you know? And lastly who ever think I'm uneducated or lazy, well good for them they are such geniuses. As far as I'm concerned if I get my point across it is enough for me.
  5. I think Tony1970 is struggling financially and wants his wife to help him out, nothing wrong with that idea. Also he doesnt want his wife to waste the degree she has worked so hard for.It is understandable.I mean you want your partner to grow intellectually and support them in achieving their best potential. Nothing is wrong with working in McDonalds but why waste all this time to go to school? Tony you need to talk with wife.It sounds like she is going through depression and has low-self esteem issues. You wrote so little about her that it is hard to say what her problems are.
  6. I guess I'm just tired of all the people I met during my nursing school experience,I can't help myself but especially those that think they are better than everybody else.I have girls in my classess who think they are God's gifts (dont know why though????),who constantly look down on people and in their eyes whom ever speaks up is stupid. Makes me think you know why on God's earth did they went into nursing. I pray they will never be my nurse,I would RUN,RUN,RUN. And the funny thing is NO ONE LIKES those GIRLS. People are nice to them but they pretend you know what I mean. Sorry I just cant stand people like that.I guess this is my pet peeve. I thought I arleady graduated from high school I guess NOT.
  7. For the thousand times I dont have an attitude...and if my preceptor will vent how much she hates her job or I will smell negativity comind from her I will just politely smile but I in my head detector for burned out nurses will go off:D.I know how to play the game hon:))If I didnt I would be long time gone from nursing program,I mean I'm sure you know how those intructors can be and with the kind of B.S from they have to put up with. Anyway just couple of last words to YOU. Dont worry about my attitude but respect other people opinions.Just because I disagree doesnt mean I have an attitude. That is a misconception on your behalf. And lastly yes I will graduate not IF and if I will keep trying to stay postive about nursing. Oh and by the way I'm not CNA,I work in the store but I still have an idea what is nursing like. And since I work and go to school I wont have time to bother you.Now I have to go back to my extensive reading. Wish you well. Kasia.
  8. I graduate in a year. Are you trying to tell me that my preceptor wont have nothing better to do than brag about how nursing much nursing sucks?Well great than it make me question why that person would even willing to precept with this kind of attitude.Nursing students need preceptors who are encouraging and uplifting,of course it is not all always going to be sweet but negativity wont change anything for better and will only makes things worse. I'm sure when you are around patients you dont show this kind of attitude even though that someone might have very poor prognosis. You know you cant change it but they can learn to live with it right? The same with nursing, you cant change all little B.S it involves but you can learn to LIVE with without dragging yourself into a black hole.
  9. Before I entered nursing field I also thought it was disgusting. But when it came down to cleaning patient's poop it felt akwardly fine to me.I guess when the person is sick, the human feces are of less importance.
  10. I have a friend who is in medical school and I asked him why he wouldnt be a nurse first and then continue with his medical studies. He replied that the reason he didnt want to do his RN was because he didnt want to deal with dirty work! Then I met a nursing student who got a job as CNA and she constantly was telling people that she does the dirty job!! What are those people thinking someone tell me please.....
  11. What we dont need nursing students is nurses who lost their enthusiasms somewhere down the line to tell us what "horrible"field" we are entering. The way you describe it this job really sound awful. LET US FIND OUT ON OUR OWN HON. THROW US IN DEEP WATER. LET AS LEARN HOW TO WALK AND TAKE A FALL. MAYBE WE WILL BE BURNED OUT NURSES OR MAYBE WE WILL BE HAPPY NURSES? YOU DONT HAVE A CRYSTAL BALL TO PREDICT OUR FUTURE. AND OUR FUTURE IS INDIVIDUAL.
  12. Ok just before starting nursing school I quit my job because it was the first semester and I had no idea what it would be like studing for nursing classess(plus I heard all the horror stories from here or there).I only had one class at a time during my first semester because I took all my required classes for the program before I actually enter the program. The only class that I had left to take was microbiology and I took it this summer (going into third semester. So as I was saying I only had one class to take and knowing what I know now I wouldnt quit and probably just reduces my hours and work weekends. The second semester was famous for being the hardest one (due to pharmacology which was a very time consuming class) plus I had medical surgical so maybe it was possible to work 1 or two days but I didnt want to risk failing so I also didnt look for work.Summer 2008 came I found work and took Microbiology. Now this third semester I have only one class at the time (like in my first semester). The first half is psychiatric nursing and second chronic care,so I'm planning to stay at my job(but I'm also applying again for loan just to be secured in case I need to quit).I start class tommorow and I work monday, wensday, and thurdsday. Then next week I'm planning to work only weekends.I arleady found out I have test coming in two weeks from tommorow and have to read 350 pages of psych nursing plus four chapters of pharmacology (review from last semester). It will be tought but I think I have my organization down so hopefully I can handle it.I appologize for this lenghty post, didnt mean to come out as an essay:p
  13. You stated that nurses had more patients to take care of,but now when the nurse takes 5-6 patients they make a big scene out of it.If you dont like the patient load, you can always switch to private duty and take care of one patient. The choice is always yours. And when I was in clinical the only time I saw patients complaining when they were in a lot of pain and had to wait for the nurse 2 HOURS so she could give them pain med.Can you blame them for that? How would you react. When I took care of a patients they were really nice,of course not all of them but MAJORITY of them and no one asked me to kiss their butt (metaphorically of course). At least they said thank you. Maybe the reason for the student not speaking up in the past was that nurses were nicer to them and were more enthusiastic about their job.
  14. I dont see them speaking up.I agree there is more B.S nurses have to deal with in these days but there are also some improvements in other aspect of nursing like technology, nurses right to speak up to the doctor. Now the nurses arent afraid to be advocate for their patients rights.Back in a day the doctor was the authority and the nurses were terrified to go againt his will. And talking from experience when I was a in Emergency room I didnt see all those nurses being so busy that they couldnt pass patient water.Again Tv shows are far-fetched.
  15. Heck,if I (a patient) am being charged in Emergency Room 2000 dollars they better bring me some water and I demand crackers:devil:
