There is a patient with 14.6s PT and 1.15 INR. How should I interpret this data?

There is a patient with PT of 14.6s and INR of 1.15.

How should i interpret this data?

What meds are they on? What for? What does your text say?

the patient was having Ceforoxime, Tramal, enalapril & atorvastatin. They are not blood thinning meds. the patient with diagnosis of hematuria.

are they on Coumadin? INR is minimally elevated. I don't know any background so 1. if they take Coumadin they are subtherapeutic. 2 if they aren't on Coumadin you they may have some liver issues or have hx of Hepatitis or alcoholism. Very minor elevation nothing really to worry about.

okay.

but i wonder why the PT is elevated but the INR is lower than the normal value.

from the information i found, normal range of PT is 11-14s while INR is 2.0-3.0

is there any feedback mechanism on that?

Hi Annie. I did find the information but i still cannot find the answer why the PT value will be elevated (Blood takes longer time to clot) while lower INR (blood clot easily).

Because normally people will have both PT and INR increase or decrease.

so i wonder is there any feedback mechanism on that?

Your first mistake is the INR level, in normal people not on blood thinners it should be less than 1. Not between 2-3. Keep reading your textbook.

If the PT is normal at 11-14s then it's essentially normal at 14.6s which is only 4% beyond the high limit.

I would interpret these as unremarkable results.

Normal INR is 1. INR of 2-3 is what you are looking for when the patient is on Coumadin.
