So we have two semesters of med surge in my school...

Last semester, I finally was able to grasp the ins and outs of Dimensional Analysis. This semester though, my professor went 3 steps back and isn't using DA yet, and I'm all confused about how to answer this... HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! :wacky:

MD orders 75mEq of sodium bicarb in 1000mL of .45NS to run at 0.086mEq per Kg/hr. Your pt weighs 160 pounds. What rate would you set your pump to run at per hour to deliver the appropriate dose?

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!

Ok. Tell me what you know about this problem. How many mEq are you going to give per hour? Do the conversion. Now, do a basic rate formula. You have your solution over your order times your...

And how much does your patient weigh in kg?

keep using dimensional analysis if that's what you comfortable with. It will work for this math problem as well. I've never used any formulas, I always used DA for every thing. In the above all it seems to be asking is to find mL/hr

This problem is not different that ay others. I'm not a big DA fan but brake it down like any other problem

First how many Kg is your patient.

Now figure how much of the med you need to deliver..... 0.086mEq x kg/hr = ______mEq/kg/hr

Now figure out how many mEq per ml in the 1000ml bag.

Now how much of that needs to infuse every hour to deliver the ordered amount.
