There is an order for fluid restriction on a patient with severe pregnancy-induced hypertension who is being induced with oxytocin. The patient has infusing LR 500 mL with 20 g magnesium sulfate added at the rate of 2.5 g/hr. The oxytocin 20 units is mixed in LR 1000 mL. The oxytocin infusion rate is 6 milliunits/min. The total fluid volume intake is not to exceed 125 mL/hr.
How many mL of water can the patient have PO per hour?
How would you figure out this question?

Not going to give the answer but I would.... figure out how many mls of fluids the pt is getting per hour (oxytocin and mag combined), subtract that from 125, and there's my answer.

This is a multi staged problem.....

First...what is the infusion rate of the 500LR with 20g MGSO4 at the rate of 2.5g per hour. How many ml/per hour is the patient receiving? (what is the pump set at)
Next...what is the infusion rate of 1000LR with 20u of oxytocin at the rate of 6mu/min. How many ml/hr is this? (what is the pump set at)
Then add part one to part 2 and get that total amount the patient is getting IV. Then subtract that from 125ml and get your total allowed po intake per hour.
