IV calculation Help!

Nursing Students Student Assist

I'm stumped on these 2 problems, can anyone give me insight on how to solve it please.

1. It is 4:30 pm and you find 100 ml of an IV running. The drop factor is 60 gtt/ml. What must the rate be in gtts/min tofinish the IV at 1930?

2. The physician orders 1000 ml of 5% D/W q12h. How many ml/hr will the client receive?

I'd really appreciate any help that is given. I just don't have a clue!

I will take a stab, I could be wrong hopefully someone will let you now if it is incorrect.

1. 100 ml x 60 gtt / 240 minutes (your four hours from 4:30 pm to 19:30) = 25 gtt

2. I think just take the 1000 ml / 12 hours it is to run = 84 ml/hr

I patially agree with you..this is mine..hope its right..

1. 100 ml x 60 drop factor / 180 mins (4:30 pm - 19:30 is 3 hours only) = 33.33 = 33 gtts/min

2. 1000 ml / 12 hrs = 83.33 = 83 ml/hr

Thanks guys, so I guess I'm confused on the time frame. 1930 is 630am correct? I think this is where I'm getting confused at. and if so wouldn't I count from 4:30 pm to 6:30 am? I'm sorry that I'm clueless on this.

Ok scratch that, I just looked it up, thanks so much for all your help. I was having a moment there!

No..1930 is 7:30pm..This is how you count military time, 11 am is 1100, 12 noon is 1200 then 1 pm is 1300, 2 pm is 1400 and so forth..so 1930 is 7:30 pm..The question has military time integrated to confuse you..let me know if you're clarified or you want me to explain further:redpinkhe

Thanks Nesty, I was confused but I got it now. I appreciate your help.
