so I am doing a worksheet to calculate flow rate for use with an EID. I am pretty sure that the formula to use is ml/hr= total infusion volume/hours of infusion. the part i am confused on is that the question includes a drop factor. here is the question:

1. Order: 1000 ml D5 ½ NS to infuse over 8 hours

Tubing available: Compatible with Electronic Infusion Device

Drop Factor: 10 gtts/ml

My answer:

Electronic Infusion Device rate:

125 ml/hr

VTBI: (Volume To Be Infused): 1000 ml

The next question:

2. Order: 250 ml NS to infuse over 30 minutes

Tubing available: Compatible with Electronic Infusion Device

Drop Factor: 15 gtts/ml

My answer:

250/0.5= 500 ml/hr

VTBI= 250 ml

any help is much appreciated!

If they were asking you to calculate numbers of gtt/min, you would need to use the gtt factor. However if all you need to know is cc/hr, then, well, all you need to know is cc/hr, and the extraneous information is just to confuse you.:)
