Nursing Students Online Learning

There is not much info regarding the online RN-BSN program at Suny Empire on the web or on AN. I am graduate from an ADN program and have 5 years experience working in the CCU. I know I eventualIy need my BSN degree and decided to go to Empire. Tuition is $245/credit so it's less expensive than most of the online schools out there. I'm not looking for an accelerated degree or a program where a class is crammed into 5 weeks. That just doesn't work for me.

I would like to share my experience so far. Although, I haven't started the semester yet because it begins in September, my experience has been smooth so far. The program is not an accelerated course and follows a traditional fall and spring semester. The application process was easy and they accepted all of my credits from my ADN. I only have to take upper division nursing classes. If you have your CCRN, they will accept it for 4 credits and you will have to take 9 classes instead of 10. There are clinicals and the clinical coordinator emails you a list of places that are close to you so you can set it up 6 months prior to starting the class. My correspondence with the professors so far have been very timely.

So, that's where I stand right now. I'll update further when the semester starts. And if you have any questions please feel to ask.

Good luck to all of you who are starting your BSN at wherever you are. :)

I was originally accepted into this program, but did not have a good experience concerning my prior credits etc. They could not give me a straight answer as to what I needed to take. I went with Ohio University which is $243/credit and they accepted all my prior credits. I liked that the classes are only 5 weeks. I started in Feb and will finish next April. I did not want to do clinicals and that is what really swayed me in my decision. When you are working 5 days a week the clinical was not a good fit for me. Good luck with your classes!

I work part time which is only 3 days in 2 weeks. I'm really not in a rush to obtain my degree because I plan to stay in my current position for a few more years for experience. Plus the fact that tuition reimbursement is prorated so this program worked for me. I just wanted to put some info here for people looking into the program as I was. I emailed my mentor about what classes transferred and what I still needed and she answered the same day with a very detailed list of what I still needed. Then I asked about clinicals and she immediately emailed a list of places, which included my place of employment. So far it's smooth sailing for me.

I know it wasn't the same experience for you but maybe Ohio was meant to be for you :) I wish you good luck. I just hoping I can help out some ADNs who want more info. Especially, now that Empire has joint admissions with some community colleges here in NY.

jonquilRN good luck with school, and I am sure others anticipating Empire will appreciate the info!

Hi,

I am considering Empire State as well. I have my ADN from a local CC in NY. All my documentation has been received by admissions (essay, transcripts, license, etc), and I am just waiting on acceptance for the January 2014 semester (RN-BSN). I would like to know how competitive it is to be accepted. I am assuming they get many applicants. I graduated with a 3.9 GPA. Thank you and best of luck!

Hi redtailhawk,

I don't really know how competitive the program is but what I can tell you is that I only applied to this program and was accepted. My GPA is slightly lower than your 3.9. I wish you good luck and I hope you are accepted into SUNY Empire. Feel free to keep in touch.

Hello jonquilRN, i am currently omw to graduating from an ADN program soon and am very interested in applying to Empire State college's RN-BSN program. Ive researched many schools and i am very interested in their program although there is limited information exactly on the courses and time frame. If you would be so kind to share some of your experience and any info or advice on the program i would greatly appreciate it.

Hi ConcretRose24,

I'm finishing my first semester at SUNY Empire and so far it's going very smoothly. Once you are accepted into the program the school will email you the name of your mentor. From there you will find out exactly what classes you need to complete the program. I'm currently taking 2 classes and I have to say it is totally doable. As far as clinicals go they give a list of approved facilities and if there is a place you'd like to go to and it is not on the list they provide the paperwork you need to get filled out so you may do clinicals at the place you choose to. The professors have been friendly and accessible. Hope this helps and good luck to you! :)

Thanks so much for your information! I am also curious as to if you have any idea on the time frame for someone to complete the program. As you said you are taking 2 classes, so how long have they projected for the completion. I am aiming to finish in a year if possible, looking forward to taking 12 credits (3 classes) per term. Thank you for your help.

Can anyone update? I am starting January 2015.

I am also interested in this program and would like to hear from someone currently in program. It's hard to find any info on the website as to the actual classes and how they are graded...papers, tests, etc. Thank you to anyone who has the time to respond!

I started the program this week. I haven't really done much yet, more looked over the site and ordered the books, looked at the schedule, etc. I think I ma going to do a bulk of the work this weekend.

Can anyone update?
