I found this buried in the GA thread and really thought it deserved a thread of its own.

Hang in there! The Representative from the 17th District just sent this to me in response to my e-mail:

Attached is a press release from Governor Perdue addressing the concerns you have about the recent decision by the Nursing Board. I agree with the Governor on this and we will be working during the next session to make the necessary changes. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Howard Maxwell

State Representative

I didn't post the attachment from Governor Perdue because it's been posted on this site for several days already.

While that is very encouraging most of us in this situation need some guarantees. I really hate to throw good money after bad. My heart tells me that good sense will triumph over this bad decision, my head tells me to look at other avenues.

Someone suggested looking at jobs in my home state, but when you have been at a hospital for any length of time you build a team with the other staff, and establish at least a modicum of seniority. The city I live in has one hospital and the city (different state) just across the river has 5 large hospitals. My husband says I shouldn't limit myself in case I ever did want to change jobs.

As it stands now I am planning on applying to the local tech college, but am not able to apply to the program for at least two semesters. Hopefully Gov. Perdue will come through for us in the meantime and I will only be behind slightly.

The only guarantees are death and taxes.

That's for sure! Sad for me I only pay income tax in GA and can't really do anything for Gov. Perdue's re-election or any other political candidate either because I live across the border.

it is encouraging and, if nothing else, should serve as a reminder that the ec students aren't alone here. i know of quite a few people who are in support of ec and its georgia students, and some of them had not even heard of the program until all of this happened. i am a 2005 ec graduate and refuse to just go away, as i'm sure georgia's 41st district representative sharon cooper wants all of us to do. as for current students, i'm all for contingency planning, but try to stay positive (if that's still possible), and more importantly, stay involved.

i've spoken to several current ec students who were highly upset, yet they had sent no letters, no e-mails, signed no petitions, and made no phone calls. our (mine included) political apathy is partly why these things happen. we may not have seen this coming, but now that it's happened, we must do everything possible to make sure it is corrected.

go to the state of georgia website and get the e-mail addresses, physical addresses, and phone numbers of the governor, lt. governor, your district representatives and senators. help to educate them and get them behind us. the more we can win over now, the easier this will be when it reaches the legislative level. i'm just not counting on rep. cooper to admit her mistake, apologize, and jump on board with us. she did all of this damage while helping to push it through from behind the scenes, deceiving both her constituents and her peers in the house. her legislation even had the support of the georgia nurses association, who had no idea what her true intentions were.

the scales seem to be tipping in our favor. let's do everything possible to keep it that way.

after all, we're right!!!!

Great point and reminder! After reading your post I felt the need and sent my representatives along with the governor the following:

As a retired Chief Petty Officer I entered the fire services as a firefighter/paramedic. I interviewed with several "brick and mortar" nursing programs to obtain education to become a registered nurse. None would support me in my bid for schooling and accommodate my need to work in order to sustain my family.

The Excelsior nursing program was recommended to me by one of the emergency room nurses as a program to consider. That was four and a half years ago. This month I complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and have been accepted into the University of Alabama in Birmingham for a Masters program to start in January of 2009. I hold nursing license in the states of Georgia, Mississippi, and North Carolina in order to support the company I am employed with.

I offer this letter in hope that you will continue to support the registered nurses in the State of Georgia who have graduated like I have from Excelsior College.

I was honestly unaware of this until you brought it to our attention, Thank you.

I am thrilled to see that the new Excelsior grads will be welcomed in GA! God Bless!!!

I live in South Carolina. I live close enough to some places in Georgia that I could commute and work there so I have been following this process. My question is, no matter where you attend school, don't you all take the same State Board's licensing exam? What has the school you attended matter if you can pass the exam for your state? Sounds like politics or somebody has "control freak" issues. Just my 0.02 cents. I hope they change it back for all of you that have worked so hard through school, not to mention the cost for Excelsior. I will say a special prayer for you all affected by this situation.:heartbeat

Pmdc I agree. Here is a petition to sign that is going to the Gov. to help EC students. Please have everyone you know sign it. This will get overturned. In GA there is buzz about the fact that the Gov. just fired three board members. Don't know if it's true or not yet but there are a lot of people saying it.

Here's the petition link.

Ask and you shall receive.

Just wanted to update you. Three board members WERE replaced! (Including the president.) And the new board members just granted a grandfather until it goes before the General Assembly for a full reversal. :yeah:
