I found this buried in the GA thread and really thought it deserved a thread of its own.

As Gov Purdue said, keep studying!

I'm glad to hear that. My state is one of the states that stopped accepting Excelsior and to be frank about it, our governor doesn't support anything except new ways to get the citizens to contribute to the state budget crisis.

I can't believe all this. I am very recently an Excelsior grad. I can't thank my lucky stars enough that I have already gotten my lisecne. I am here in GA and have been following this very close.
Honestly, the best place to keep up on this is the student forum at Kaylim Career Institute. http://www.kaylimcareerinstitute.com/student-forum?func=showcat&catid=4
Whether you go there or not they are now letting people into the students only area to stay updated. They post EVERY bit of detail they get both good and bad. You can make your own judgments.
The funnies thing is that Sharon Cooper has completely gone back on what she said. SHE wrote the bill that caused this and now, according to kaylim's forum, she has said she "does not want to close the door on Excelsior."
Reality TV doesn't get any better than this! I know the gov will put stuff straight. It's his job.
The only thing that I hate is that I am now, for as long as I am in GA, under a crappy board of nursing. I do not trust them. I can't belive they tried to get away with not even giving a grandfather. I hope that meeting in Jan is open. I have a thing or two to say....

I am not familiar with Kaylim; are they affiliated with Excelsior? I am just trying to figure out why they are so invested in this case. I live in Atlanta and have never heard of Kaylim Career Institute.
Apparently they have a distance learning program that was also affected by this decision.
I attend Kaylim career center, and, Kaylim is not associated with Excelsior. Kaylim is a facility where you go to take tutor sessions to help you better understand and process the nursing concept materials. Just like in instructor from a traditional school would do.
Distance Learning is a publishing company, you buy their materials to study for the nc test, and you also use them in you turtor sessions.
This route is strictly optional, u can go through ec without paying extra for these resources.
My opinion as to why they are so vested in this situation, is, if excelsior isn't accepted in this state anymore, a hugh market for their services would be gone, and this may even put them out of business.
I am not promoting Kaylim and distance learning, nor am I speaking against them, I am just stating the FACTS about the services they provide.
Yeah, you're right Zoeyzoe. They will be effected but i know they really have been fighting really hard. They were on the news at the meeting in sep speaking against the decision so thats really good. I also attended Kaylim and really enjoyed it. I needed something to keep me going.
I think this whole thing will bring excelsior back stronger than ever. I KNOW this will get sorted. I just wish they would replace the board members for pulling this stunt.

Yes i agree, they should be replaced. This is a clear cut case of what abuse of power is.

I guess I am not up on politics, but if a Governor signed a bill and doesn't agree with it why can't he just rescind the bill???
I pretty much understand the reasoning that the GaBoN has with not wanting nurses who don't have moderate clinical experience to be licensed, but they are shutting out thousands of nurses who are trying to better the nursing field and themselves. I live in SC and have worked for four years in GA as an LPN at a pretty prestigious hospital on an acute care floor. In my hospital it is the policy that the LPN's can do all that the RN's can except hang epidural medication and be a charge nurse. They even get around the charge nurse part by lettting the LPN's be assitant charge while the Nurse manager is in the hospital. I have been with Excelsior about 18 months and had about 8-12 months to go to finish up my RN courses and test. I just found out in October that GA is not going to endorse me. Excelsior didn't find it necessary to notify me because I live in SC. Now I have pretty much wasted thousands of dollars with them and have to apply to "traditional" schools in order to finish up, adding at least 18 more months and thousands more dollars. Very frustrating.
I guess my long point is there should be exceptions. Of course I believe this because I have 7000 hours of Med-Surg experience and have even oriented several RN's. Not to mention that most of the doctors on our floor say they can't tell the difference between my skills as an LPN and an any other RN on the unit. I imagine others are similarly frustrated.
Well, I would continue on, babycakes. You might be able to get a license in a different state, or into the VA - hang tought, whatever you decide.
I'm sorry that GA did this to you all.
