I'm reading through the Excelsior critical elements flashcards, and was wondering how common is it to receive wound management, drainage & specimen collection, enternal feeding, and irrigation assigned during the PCS? For at least the wound management it will be just about the same as the Lab simulation. But I'm reading the drainage and specimen collection element, and for one of the steps, it says "Insert tube into the appropriate body cavity". Do we have to actually insert any tubes, such as straight caths for urine collections or NG tube for any specimen collections. I'm kind of nervous with this critical element when it says we have to "insert tubes". :uhoh3:

On my very first PCS. I had a very confused old lady on contact isolation and a big abdominal wound that I had to pack. I was nervous but I did it just like in the lab and I was fine. I am not sure how often you get these areas of care but I would prepare. I am sure they look for opportunites to incorporate them so don't rule them out.

They may ask you to insert a foley. I don't think you have to insert a NG tube but you may have to check for placement. Remember only do what the Kardex says. If you have a patient with an NG tube and the Kardex does not tell you to check for placement, then DONT do it.

I was assigned wound management in one PCS and enteral feeding in another. The enteral feeding was on a 5-week-old baby, but it was by a bottle. Oh, the torture of holding a little baby and feeding him! (Loved it!)

I was hoping not to get any sites that have peds pts! I'm very comfortable taking care of adult pts, its just the infants and toddlers that makes me nervous and not knowing what I all have to do for them, especially when you'll have their parents and the CE scrutinizing your every move! :uhoh21: But I'm going to do the best I can regardless of what is assigned to me and TRY to concentrate on the critical elements I have assigned. But I know I have to look and talk like I know what I'm doing, even though my heart will be trying to jump out of my chest!

Utica has a very low risk of peds but that is not a guarantee. When I went they split us up into two groups. My group had an adult substitute but the other group had a 10 month old.
