Can you understand this? Board of Alabama re this program

Nursing Students Online Learning

Hi everyone,

I am an LPN in Alabama and went to our board of nursing today online to see if there was anything saying we could'nt use Excelsior College to get our RN. I found the following message on their site and its confusing. Anyone from Alabama taking the Nursing program? Or that may know more about it? Thank you also for all your posts everyone, they help so much when you first get started. Have a great day.

From Alabama Board of Nursing per their site.

"Q. I am an Excelsior Graduate. Am I eligible for licensure by Endorsement?

A. Excelsior’s one day or one weekend of testing is not clinical and does not meet our requirements. You would have to demonstrate that you meet the requirements for Alabama, which includes theory and clinical in adult, maternal-child and psychiatric nursing. Each applicant is reviewed individually. We do not prescreen so we can not tell in advance if you will meet the requirements or not. You would need to supply a copy of your LPN transcript (if applicable) and work experience as a way to demonstrate that you meet the requirements."

Ps, do I have any options?, am a single mom and this would really help.

yes, i have clinical hours in all those areas of nursing. plus we even got to go do a rotation in the er, oncology, dialysis, and icu, as you stated. what more do they want? there are 37 states that approve excelsior, i see the majority doesn't have a problem. the problem lies with the 13 states that have issues, not the 37 that don't. i just don't get it, they will approve foreign education (i'm speaking of the ones with limited clinical experience) over a school accredited by the nln. lol doesn't make sense to me.

I understand the whole wanting clinical hours completed. I had over 1000 hours of clinicals in my LVN program. I've had a lot of hands on experience that most RN students were never able to experience. I had a friend who graduated from nursing school in the Philippines who didn't even get to start an IV or do IV pushes in school and didn't even know what the Z-Track Method was. :sstrs:

If you don't have clinical hours as any type of nurse, then yes you should have to do some sort of clinical rotation before you're allowed to be licensed as a RN. But for those of us who are LVN/LPN, we do have the clinical experience.

i was going to mention foreign education also but stopped because i didn't want to criticize it as i have aunts and cousins who got their bsns from the philippines but how sure are these boards that their education met the standard when us lpns/lvns actually did our clinicals here in the u.s.

anyway, sorry op if we hijacked your thread but i wish you luck and i hope you find the correct information about your situation. good luck!

Yup, I did hijack the thread, and I apologize. Okkkkk now, ALABAMA, what are your plans in order to get licensed? Do you live in an area that's close to a neighboring state that accepts Excelsior? Maybe you can work there for the required amount of time and then apply for endorsement. I wish I had that opportunity but CA is just big and the nearest border is the ocean

Specializes in Home Health, Podiatry, Neurology, Case Mgmt.

Don't forget that you can also work at a VA hospital or on a military base hospital if that is nearby with ANY state license! =)

Very limited VA Hospitals and absolutely no military bases nearby. Wish there was better news for us CA students as most of us are getting frustrated with the waiting game. Thanks for the suggestion though, maybe it can help someone else.

Thanks everyone, We want to live in Alaska anyhow (been there). I guess there's no time like the present. I am a veteran so will check into the hospitals too. Going to check Alaska's BON now. I am SO excited about this option to get my RN degree! Congrats to all of you too!
