Are there any good online nursing programs in California?

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hello. Here is my background. I have no medical experience whatsoever and graduated from high school a year ago. I'm finishing up my GEDs right now and I have no other degrees. I want to enter either an ADN or a BSN program that allows me to study online and do clinicals with a local preceptor or something similar to this. I live in Orange County, California so I'm hoping there is an online school near here or in Los Angeles. Thanks! :)

Also, are the online nursing programs expensive? How much is it to finish the program usually or do they all differ greatly?

Not sure about Southern Ca but I cant think of one like you are describing around here. The online programs are usually for people who are already RNs and are going for their BSN. Especially since you have no medical background I cant imagine you would really benefit from a program such as that. Going to school the old fashion way is great---you meet great people who can help you when it gets tough..and it does get tough. I am only in my 3rd week of an accelerated BSN program and I have enough readings to keep 3 people busy.

Good luck.

I echo what the above poster said, only 100 times more. Without a medical background (and I don't mean a CNA) it would not be advisable to get your nursing education online. There is already conflict over people who have worked in the medical profession using online programs to further their degrees, much less people with no healthcare background whatsoever.

You may find an unscrupulous online program who would be willing to take you in...for a high price.

You should run like heck from these programs as your best interest is not a concern of theirs. There have been innocent people who unwittingly lost $20,000+ that they will never recover because the online school they were using went under. In spite of going into debt they STILL do not have their nursing degrees. What a way to learn how cold and cruel the world really is!

This isn't to bring you down but to bring you up. By going through a traditional nursing program with regular, supervised clinicals you will be getting an extremely valuable education that you will take with you the rest of your life. It would be unfair and even cruel to suggest an online program to you at this point in your life.

I had no idea. Thanks for the input! Yea, even I sorta guessed that the traditional way would be better for people like me :p

I would check with the board of nursing to make sure they accept this program or any other, for that matter. The California BORN is very particular about non-traditional ADN programs, which is why they don't accept Excelsior anymore

I don't know if someone has mentioned it or not, but if you go ahead and get your ADN at a community college (or somewhere like that) then you can do your BSN online. There is an online program in southern Cal in fact through Cal State Dominguez Hills. http://www.csudh.edu/ That's the one I'm planning on doing and it looks like you can complete it in four semesters if you go fulltime.

Good luck to you!
