Nurses Criminal

Published

After twenty years of being in the manual labor workforce, I have started towards going back to school for my AAS to become an RN. Everything appears to be in order. The question I have is how will a conviction for assault and battery affect me? The state of Virginia does not expunge charges. I am now nearly forty, and got in a fight in public when I was twenty, arrested, charged, and convicted for a&b. Asides from a misdemeanor trespass charge (which occurred when I was nineteen), and is not listed as a barrier crime, it is the only conviction that I have. Is this a significant enough amount of time to have passed to where this will not be an issue with doing clinicals for school, or for employment? According to the site which lists VA barrier crimes, if it's been at least five years, and there's only one conviction, then it is not a disqualification, but is this realistically the case?

Have you contacted the Virginia Board of Nursing? They are really the only ones who can accurately answer your question.

Good luck!!
