Theft & lies, can I get a license still?

Hello all,

I am in MI and to make a very long story short, here we go. I have a 3rd degree retail fraud conviction (2003) and a larceny under $200 (2008). Both are misdemeanors and both are expunged. I was 17 at the time and deeply regret my actions, however, time goes on and I cannot change the past. Upon graduation, I will be totally honest with the state about my disclosure but I am concerned about the court documentation that will be needed. The larceny conviction occurred in 2006 when I was working at a hospital- I took a co-worker's jeans and was busted then fired. I was so ashamed for my behavior and I didn't want anyone knowing I could do something like that so I lied to everyone. I admitted guilt before sentencing but I am afraid my dishonesty is all over the documentation that the state will request.

My main concern is that MiBON will have my two theft related convictions, the fact that initially I lied about my guilt, and I have been fired from 2 health care facilities as a result of the theft convictions. Six months after I was fired from the hospital, I was hired at an assisted living home (had not been arrested for the jeans theft yet). I held that job for 8 mos and was arrested for the jeans larceny and ultimately fired after sentencing because I was then ineligible for employment in a health care facility for 5 yrs.

That restriction has come and gone, my record has been wiped clean, and I will be graduating next may. I will value any opinions you may have and thank you for any input you may give regarding the detail of documentation required by the state about the prior conviction(s). THANK YOU!

First and foremost, even with the expungement, please it will be in your best interest to tell the BON the truth. Tell them just how your wrote it on here. Good luck!

Can I use this thread to answer the nursing hopeful's question "I was wondering if there were any ways to get ahead before starting nursing school?" Well, how about some things NOT to do........

Dear OP, I do truly sympathize with you. You so regret a moment of indiscretion as a "stupid" teenager over 10 years ago.

Assuming you have been keeping out of trouble since then (Nursing school can keep one pretty busy) just be straightforward and honest (they will found out anyway) in your application. I suspect you will not have any serious consequences for a misdemeanor that old.

Well you will need to have all your papers ready for bon.This includes you court papers which shows expungment and out come of your cases.You will need proof of your rehabilitation or outstanding references from college professors or your former boss.You should send them in with application and hope for the best.Every board is different just do not lie about it, as they will find out anyway.Most bon find out about all expunged/erased/purged/you name it arrest/charges through doj.Your best bet is to do doj check on yourself to see what is no there.But be honest anyway.As for the job that is different animal.Its tough out there but do not give hope.
