Nurses Criminal

Ok, so long story short. I have an expunged misdemeanor in domestic violence. It happened a few years ago. Nothing else on my record, just that whole violent assult thing. Is there any chance of finding employment once the degree is achieved? Plan on going for my BSN.

Contact your state BON to see if it'll prevent you from getting licensure. Sometimes, a record can prevent you from even getting placement in clinicals. You might need to consult an attorney.

Expunged records are often helpful in the job hunt as you usually don't have to disclose them and they don't appear on most background screens. But your arrests may still be visible on background screens, and you'd still have to explain them.

However, most if not all BONs require you to disclose even expunged charges...so your bigger hurdle is actually getting licensed in the first place.

Agree with the prior poster: you may need to consult an attorney (you'll find ones familiar with BONs here: TAANA Executive Office - Home), especially if you have any questions about how to complete school/job applications...and definitely if the BON ever wants you to appear in front of them to discuss your criminal record.

Best of luck.
