Maryland... MBON

Nurses Criminal

Published

I have one misdemeanor theft (7years) and I am wondering if someone can help me find a clearance check list that automatically excludes certain convictions from becoming a RN/CNA in maryland. I have checked their website and can't find anything! I just moved here from ohio and want to become a CNA and then a RN. Have anyone here been excepted to Montgomery college RN program with a criminal history? this is getting discouraging

Hi Motivated...if your record is expunged, my understanding is even the BON doesn't see it, conversely, it is illegal. I had my record expunged and it doesn't show. Get a copy from the FBI to double check but it shouldn't affect you.

If it is expunged....you DONT HAVE a record! Hope this helps.

To all members:

Some information given can be very incorrect. This is why we ask that you check with your individual BON.

Even with expunged records; if your BON asks if you have ever been arrested, charged, convicted, you have to answer 'yes'. Just because the record is expunged does not mean you can answer 'no'. Be careful.

@Lyn222RN- Hi, how long did it take for the board to contact you to sit and defend yourself in front of them? How long did it take to get your license after that? Also, did you get your cna first and if so, did you have to go through the same waiting and sitting in front of the board again for the RN? I am in my last semester at MC and from what I can tell, we have some stuff in common with long ago charges. Thanks for any answers.

@arlenejross Did you have to jump through any hoops to get into MC because of your record? I really want to go to this school for nursing and I hear its a great school. When I got my CNA license in Ohio it was fairly easy and I didn't have to do anything with BON at all, and I even worked for a home health aide agency right after I got my registry license. The thing that got me discouraged is that when I applied for LPN class at a private school I was turned down, and it was against their policy to tell me why:confused:. I did really good on the math and teas reading and I had great references (so i thought)but I still don't know why i was rejected and I can't help but to think it was due to my record. I have since moved to Maryland and the CNA class start next month.

@studentjoy- see that's the tricky thing about it. When i got fingerprinted for the LPN school I actually called down to BCI&I(FBI) to be certain that the record was expunged and what would be disclosed to the school. The catch is that if you work with older adults or children that they CAN disclose your expunged/sealed record to the school in which you apply and the BON. The reason they can disclose it to the school is because in clinical you may have to work around children and older people. I will tell you this, I know of a few nurses with felonies and misdemeanors and they are gainfully employed and making a great life for themselves. I have not even started my pre-req courses yet but I want to do as much I as can to help myself. I will be doing a lot of networking in the mean time because you never know who might be able to lend you a helping hand or put in a good word for you.

@motivatedlilly oh that would be really frustrating to get turned down by a school and not know why :( I didn't have a single problem getting into MC. I have gone to clinicals with no issues. It is just that when I went to get my CNA license through the BON so I could work as a tech while finishing up school, I was unable to get a 90 day letter like everyone else due to the fact that I have a record. Now I am stressed about it and hoping that it doesn't take forever- or that I will have put in all this work for nothing. I do feel encouraged by your post and the posts of others who say that they know of nurses with "a past" who are licensed and working. Good luck with your journey. I will keep you updated with what happens to me. Also, MC is a great school. I really like it and have learned a lot there.
