Becoming a nurse with a criminal record

Nurses Criminal

Published

I need some advice. I am currently in a C.N.A program and i want to become a nurse someday. I am 21 years old now but when i was thirteen something that i deeply regret and wish never happend happend. I got into a huge fight at my middle school and it involved 3 girs fighting me. We were all arrested and taken to juvie. I had actually forgotten about that whole situation and never thought of it as a convinction. So when the c.n.a apolication asked if i was ever convincted i said no and now after doing research online and googling i feel i have ruined my future. I dont know what to do im afraid that as soon as the facility sees it on my record they will drop me but i never thought it was a convinction because i did community service and probation and everything was done with. Is there anything i can do?

Anything on your record when you are under 18 does not make it onto your adult record unless you were charged as an adult. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Well this depends. When you mention the application, you said facility so Im guessing you applied for employment? If you are in a CNA program and have to apply for licensure you will most likely need to disclose the conviction if asked on the application because your state will see any and all convictions no matter your age when convicted. Also, depending on the background check company and if state or federal based, they will be able to see a juvenile conviction. I am 100% sure because I have a juvenile conviction and I thought it was hidden but it WAS NOT. What I would do first is run a background check on yourself or go to the courthouse you went to for the proceedings. Ask to get your record there so you know what it is and the actual conviction, or if the conviction was set aside you will learn that too when you do that. In the meantime, you can look into getting this expunged as I would HIGHLY recommend. You would legally be able to say you were never convicted of a crime. Best of luck to you! Personally, seeing that you were young and this was quite a few years old, I do not see issues with licensure, however it may be a problem when applying for a job. Like I said, my juvenile conviction came up on a background check for every long term care/assisted living home/hospital that I have ever applied to, thus it is SO important to get it expunged. Good luck :)
