Long term care and hospice

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I'm a 2015 grad I've been working in med/surg for about 6 months, but I know this is not where I belong. I would like some input as to what an RN's job entails in long term health facilities and hospice. Trying to find a place that I can spend time needed doing emotional and spiritual support along side some health care.

I left hospice for a grand total of 89 days before turning in my resignation at the LTC facility that I was working at and accepting an inpt hospice position (had been previously doing hospice home care)- in a LTC facility, you have ZERO opportunity to do any type of emotional support to families. And even in inpt hospice, sometimes opportunitites to do emotional care/support are limited (but that is when you hand off to the next shift to be sure that SW or chaplain sees the family. On another note- you should beware of trying to do spiritual care as that is not what your role as a nurse is.
