Attention NY nurses!!!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Well I have been a frequent poster on this site regarding my disgust at the lack of Nursing Jobs. Well I finally found a great job with amazing benefits and they are NYSNA affiliated. The only downside is they are located in Plattsburgh (I live in Albany) but I have no problems with relocating. The reason I am posting this is because they are opening brand new units in the hospital and they need nurses BADLY, and the HR director told me they are hiring new grads too! My rate of pay is almost what I made as a traveler! Trying to help my fellow NYers out! If you don't mind relocating, definitely check them out! Their website is http://www.cvph.org

Thanks for the heads up!! Hopefully a similar opportunity will still be around next year after I graduate with my BSN. Plattsburgh was one of the areas I was considering so this is great news.

There are plenty of Nursing Jobs in Syracuse as well. The rate of pay is decent and the cost of living is much less than Albany.

I did apply to SUNY Upstate because I did 4 months of contracts there back in 2009-2010 and I really liked it (especially the 24 hour Tim Horton's and coldstone creamery in the treehouse LOL). Unfortunately, like every hospital I applied to in the Albany area, they probably saw the A.A.S after my name and immediately put my application in the shredder. At least CVPH is giving me a chance, with the stipulation that I enroll in school to obtain my BSN.

Wow, that is surprising. I've seen plenty of new grads with only their Associates degree. SUNY has a bachelor's program and pays for their nurses to go back and complete their degrees. Also this program is only available to those that are already RNs. With so many Associates nursing programs in the area, (there are 5 that I can think of), it would be foolish not hire from such a pool of potential candidates.

It boggles my mind too! It was actually one of the first places I applied to, I went to the website and saw 4 job openings on 8E for the night shift. They didn't even call me. When I was contracted I was primarily on 8E, but I floated to 8F, 9E, 9F, burn ICU, MICU, and SICU. So I have experience working at just about every ICU in that hospital. I don't get it.

What is the pay like in Syracuse? I'm originally from Utica, but live in NYC, and I was considering going back until I heard the nurses are only paid about $45,000 (which is too low even by upstate standards). A lot of NYC educated nurses head to Cooperstown to work at Basset for a couple years before moving back to NYC and getting a tony hospital job. I was also considering that, BUT with the intention of staying there...and their pay is pretty low, too. It seems to be difficult finding an upstate hospital willing to pay well that isn't being overrun by temporary NYC nurses. I'm pretty much willing to move anywhere in the state.

It really all boils down to how much experience you have, but seeing as it's a SUNY hospital the nurses are state employees and they are unionized through CSEA. I know for a fact they are paid well, whoever told you $45,000 a year was way off. They pay more than any of the hospitals in the Albany area and you have the state benefits. I've never worked in NYC, but I know that you guys are paid well, but then again the cost of living is so darn high I've heard nurses tell me they are paying $1500 for a studio apartment, while in Syracuse you would only be paying $600 a month for a comparable apartment. The cost of living in Albany is ridiculous as well, but not anywhere near as bad as NYC.

To give you a ballpark figure, nurses who are employed by NYS department of health, the starting salary is $55,000 a year, and that's for a 9-5, Monday-Friday, desk nursing job. I highly doubt NYS pays their hospital nurses who work 12 hour shifts and have to put up with 10 times the amount of bullcrap, less than they pay office nurses. If you're thinking about moving that way, SUNY upstate is the way to go.

I'm across the lake from Plattsburgh. It's not the big city, but Montreal is an hour away.

Yeah I remember them telling me that they don't have a neurosurgeon so all of the intracranial bleeds are sent "across the lake".

Yeah, NYC is insane for cost of living. I live an hour from Manhattan in Brooklyn and pay $1500...I couldn't touch a Manhattan apartment! The pay is great though (for hospitals)...most start in the mid-$70's which is why job competition is so fierce. That's why so many head upstate for a couple years before coming back down. I just can't wait to leave NYC...high pay or not, I have a hard time justifying dishing out almost $2,000 a month for an apartment. A lot of people love it, but it's not for me.
