Difficulty finding job as a new nurse

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello,

I am a new nurse(RN) who is having a difficult time finding a job. I currently reside in Delaware County, Pennsylvania and I've applied to hospitals, LTC facilities and home care agencies. I've noticed that most institutions require experience well I need to start somewhere so that I can get some experience. Where do they expect the experience to come from if you don't start somewhere. Can anyone out there help me PLEASE?

Welcome to the nursing shortage. Keep rolling on towards your BSN.......

Allnurses just added a new forum just for this type of question. I would check over there. I think its called something along the lines of "first nursing Job Search"

Also facilities don't really care about where "you" get your experience from just as long as the nurses they hire have some. Once they finally burn through all the experienced nurses they'll have to start training them.

Though for the amount we pay for college nowadays we should have been ready to go out of the box.

There are several posts about this very topic. I studied in Delaware County as well, did all my clinicals there. Graduated with my BSN. I ended up moving out of state to get a great job. My senior year our professors told us the states that would have job openings. My friend who graduated over a year and half ago just got hired in Philly. My best advice? Stay tenacious. 1 out of the 100 applications or calls you make will lead you to a job eventually. Unfortunately, the market is overwhelmed with new grads. But it only takes one job "to have

experience." Also, be willing to look outside the box. Any and everything medical that may need a nurse - schools, LTCs, surgery centers, rehabs - may just be the ticket. Good luck!

Just keep applying. Most hospitals require online applications, while a lot of the subacute facilities (at least in my area) require in-person applications. Follow with respectful phone inquiries. Apply, apply, apply. I did that and got a job. I was about to go to some places in person to try to meet hiring managers when I got a job. BTW, my email box was stuffed with rejection letters.

This is going to be a huge problem in a few years and nurses start retiring again. There will be a shortage of "experienced" nurses. In a perfect world, hospitals would hire a healthy mix of experienced and inexperienced nurses; however, the people who really run hospitals (businesspersons) like to push things off into the future.
