Nurses Safety

Published

My question is twofold. First, a little background. I work in a very large teaching hospital in an interventional radiology setting. We have about 5 rooms, 10 RTs and 8 RNs as well as other staff.

First scenario: I trained for PICC line insertion after all the nurses had been asked if they wanted to train. Another RN accepted the training at that time, but eventually decided she didnt want a full time position doing it. In about 3-4 months I was working on my own with good success rates. I completed various training to do the PICCs such as an approved course, flouroscopy credentialing etc- at that time I was also still taking call, ie:working my 8 hours placing the PICCs then taking over doing the other position- mostly conscious sedation for procedures until all hours. I was promised the full time position in PICCs with no call "right after the holidays" but wasnt taken off the call schedule until about July.In the meantime, my annual evaluation came up during which I was given the minimum "meets standards" raise. I am the only RN in the department who can function in 2 jobs....yet they failed to give me a raise commensurate with my expanded responsibilities(the extra training and work wasnt even mentioned, nor was their failure to live up with their side of the bargain in terms of taking me off call)My "new" job title and job description do not reflect my actual job, they are the same as all the other nurses without the extra training. I approached my immediate boss to discuss the annual review, but was told "there are percentages we must follow"

In the meantime, with the new budget year, overtime is suddenly an issue, and they have started docking people for lunches they never receive. I have outpatients scheduled a lot of times at 10:30-2:00 and end up finishing with the possibility of a real lunch at around 3 PM. Why clock out at 3 PM when everything from the cafeteria is sold out and I still have work to complete for the next day? That to me isnt reasonable since I am supposed to leave at 4 PM. There is no other person to relieve me for a lunch, and a lot of times I literally dont have time to even stand in the break room and inhale something from home for 10 minutes.

The old annual review is coming around again, and I have the sneaking suspicion that Im going to get the same raise as last year- the barest minimum.

What would you do?

Thanks for your input.

if you do not get the review and raise you want, I think I would write down all of your accomplishments to date, and present them to your boss. You could write a rebuttal, stating how valuable you are, and why you deserve a better raise. If they won't give it to you, why not update your resume' and look elsewhere?

They say they have percentages that they must follow- tell them that you do, too.

Helllonurse gave good advice. You are a valuable "commodity"(sorry)to them and they are trying to bleed you of every drop. If after you do what Helllo said and it goes nowhere...you pack it up. You will be snatched up with such valuable skills!

I'd find another position.
