Nurses Safety

Published

So on the second occasion I gave my pt a small slice of cake that we have stored in out fridge from the kitchen. The 1st reading was 48 I gave 2 glasses of oj and it went to 110. Then later it was 48 I gave a piece of cake and it went up later to 331 the dr was soo ****** he yelled to the charge nurse saying why would anyone give a diabetic pt cake. Was that so wrong???

Is this OP a nurse of any kind?

I'm curious about what kind of setting this is. I can't imagine just grabbing a patient cake out of what I'm assuming is the break room fridge?

In the future stick with your facilities protocols and/or ask your charge nurse if in doubt. Cake was not a good choice, lessened learned. I understand what your concern was, but in the future try to think of the consequences that can occur with your interventions. I figure you're a newer nurse, or perhaps new to your current setting?

Perhaps next time you could try a Snickers or a bag of Skittles?

I'm kidding, I'm kidding!!

Yeah, that was definitely too much. I have been type 1 diabetic since 1995 and that is too much carbs and sugar within a short space of time. The numbers will eventually go up by the first hour, if not, then a little more OJ or milk should do it. Cake on the other hand, just sends your blood sugar through the roof as it's made from flour and sugar which is a double whammy for diabetics.
