Making it through Nursing School with Children

Nurses Safety

Published

;) Hi everyone. I am a first year nursing student with two small children. I am now entering my second semester (I'm in a 2 yr. RN program). Last semester was very difficult with regard to juggling school and taking care of my family. I'm deathly afraid of this semester because we're starting IVs and Fluid and Lytes, and I'm just so scared that I won't have enough energy to juggle everything. I am determined...I passed with a B+ last semester, but I really struggled at times, and I cried a lot!:o

Any insight and suggestiong would be wonderful.

PS -- I have a very loving and supportive husband who is a godsend, but I feel guilty for escaping all the time to study!

Thanks in advance for the advice!;)

It's nice to read these replies - I am currently on the wait list for the ADN program and am wondering how I will keep up with the home/my family. I have been a SAHM to my three beautiful kids aged 10, 5 and 1 for 6 years, and I have a hard time keeping up even now :uhoh21: :chuckle I'm getting my non nursing classes and electives out of the way now while I'm on the wait list so my load is lighter later - I'm starting classes May 17!! - hopefully that will ease the stress somewhat. Thanks for your honest posts and encouragement {{{hug}}}

Specializes in ER straight out of nursing school.

I am in my last semester of and ADN program. Only 38 more days and counting!!!! I have 4 girls ages 3, 4, 10 and 11. My husband travels with his job and is only home one day a week. So, in essence I am a single mom going to nursing school. It is hard. It is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. BUT IT IS WORTH IT!!! You will be so glad that you are doing this.

I work in the ER as a nurse extern also, and I LOVE MY JOB! I cannot wait to be an RN and save some lives :)

GOOD LUCK and remember to take time for YOU, not anyone else, but you. That is probably the best advice I recieved from one of my instructors. I was having a meltdown in the nursing lab one day during first semester, balling my eyes out. She came to me, gave me a hug and told me to go do something for me. Even if it was only for a couple of hours, I needed me time, not related to school or family. It worked wonderfully. So now, I take one afternoon a week and go to Barnes and Noble for Coffee and read Patricia Cornwell or Scrapbooking magazines :nurse:

All of my children were in school when I started nursing school. Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 4th, and 6th grades. Hubby was very supportive and even built me a special place in the outside garage to study. It had lights, and a study table, when the garage door was shut that meant NO KIDS Allowed. I always made the kids come home from school fix a quick snack and everyone sit down at the table for homework. It was great quality time with the kids. If you didn't have homework you had to bring home a book to read while everyone else was doing homework. When the last child was done with homework if I needed more study time it was off to the garage. Hubby did a lot of cooking,(very good cook also) his mom taught him well. The deal was on days I had school he would cook and on days that I did not have school I did the cooking. Everyone helped keep the house picked up. It worked out great for me and now with 2 left at home and in high school they have developed good study habits.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I'm an LVN student. The best, most diligent students in my class are the women with children. There are 3 women in my class with kids, and each woman has 2 young kids. I currently should be studying...
