Call-in days

Nurses Safety

Published

I would like to know how many call-in days nurses at other facilities get. At my facility we get 1 call-in per 6 months. This seems outrageous to me and it's unsafe. We work in a place where people are already sick and when the nurses are sick too it makes for a very dangerous situation. Besides that, you're not going to be able to do your job very well if you feel like crap. Now, you can call in for multiple days on one call-in but past 2 you need a doctor's excuse. Also, if you have a weekend or a scheduled day off and you called in the day before and the day after it counts as 2 separate occurrences. How is it at other facilities?

I get 2 days a year.

But, I have an open LOA d/t Crohn's so if I call in and state I'm having pain, lower intestinal problems, nausea, etc it doesn't count against me - unless I meet my 90 days allowed per year which I've never come close to. Most of the time I pop some immodium and take 12.5mg of phenergan and go to work - not to worry, it doesn't make me sleepy considering my usual dosage is 50mg. Now that will knock me out.

I have to be in alot of pain to call in but I still average about 10 missed days a year even though they are excused - dr sends me to ER to get IV fluids and pain medicine. Even through all that I still get marked 'unacceptable absences' on my yearly evaluation. I'm looking for a new job so I'm wondering how that's going to go. Not too many managers like employees who miss 10 days a year and are hospitalized routinely. Not like I enjoy sleeping in a bed on the same floor where I work.

Last weekend we had a nurse who passed out. Turns out she had the intestinal bug and a UTI but didn't have any more sick days left so it was come in throwing up with diarrhea or get fired. I was sooooooo angry that she exposed not only her pt's, coworkers including me, someone with a compromised immune system. Took her over 5 mins to come to - they did let her go home though.

My brother works in IT and gets 20 personal days a year and 12 sick days.

But yet us healthcare workers who are exposed to exotic diseases get a measly 2 days (in my case). BTW, that's actual days. So if you get the flu and call in for 2 days you better pray that you don't get sick again because that's it.

Funerals count too, unless it is a spouse, child, parent, mil, or fil.

Bethin,

Hey, that is so crazy that in our industry, you see a co-worker go down on the job and than the harrassment or firing begins. No compassion, no empathy, actually no concern period. So frustrating. Been there, had it done to me and I think, wait till karma comes back to you or someone in your family. Not a nice thought, but a great wakeup call as to what really is happening here. Some one is sick and shows up to work to CYA and gets the kick in the behind. Unbeleivable.

I wish I had it as a mantra earlier. I have been very stupid with my health. Not in the way that most people my age are, I do not do things like do drugs, sleep around, drink, or smoke. I do things like, ignore symptoms, or push myself to hard. Even this last surgery, I had it on Friday the 22nd and I went on a choir tour Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th. I regretted it, and I have done similar things before. It takes me a while to learn, but I am slowly getting the picture.

We are a bunch of die hards when it comes to looking after ourselves before we sometimes figure it out, I think. What I hate is the flare-ups that take you backwards after working so hard to get moving foreward. Take it easy JustaPatient, and try to "nurse yourself". I know it is easier said than done, but I keep trying, not always successful, just keep wishing that black cloud would go away and let the light keep shining through, I figure the right place at the right time thing will come some day (year!!lol)

that is unbelievable! I live in New Zealand and many non-healthcare areas give 5 days sick leave a year, but in my workplace it's 10 paid days a year, and if you need more its given without pay to a certain limit, think its a month - then they will start talkin bout letting you go if you can't do the duties you are employed to do,

At one job I was fired.......laying in a hospital bed after an open lap for endometriosis. My charge nurse came to my bed in the hospital and told me it's not your work, you've exceeded the 3 days a year sick time off. Unbelievable. And it was Nurses day/week whatever.:nurse:

You ought to find her and have a chat now that you're healed. Or better yet, get a lawyer and sue her and the employer for outrageous whatever, if it's not past any statute of limitations.

That is really cold, cold totally disrespectful behavior. Maybe you could take out an ad in some nurse journal or website and name the name of this horrible place that did this to you. Or get it into your local news.

Were you having trouble with your boss before your surgery?
