what is considered "official offer"?

Hello ladies and gentlemen! quick question here about job offers.

since I got an offer through the phone, I now need to give two weeks notice, but I remember someone say "don't quit until you have a written offer". After I did the interview, I got an offer via phone, HR lady saying that the manager and director were very happy and had compliments for me, and they would like to offer me the position, which I accepted. The conversation ended with "welcome to our facility", and that she will process the paperwork.

So at this point, should I give two weeks notice to my current employer?

PS: side question- I hear that some places require nurses to finish assignments. At this point, assignments are out until mid January or so (making me work BOTH thanks giving and Christmas without differential), so I will probably tell them to kiss my cheeks if they demand me to do 6-8 more weeks. Are there any penalties if I disobey that and just do 2 weeks, or not at all in case they let me go or I refuse to do 6-8 weeks? Thank you!

You can ask HR when is your starting date? If it's too soon ask them to change it. You can also ask them when can you expect to receive the official offer letter.

I am not sure what is meant by finishing assignments -- you mean all the hours on the schedule?

As far as the job offer, I would just ask for a written offer letter. HR should be able to generate that easy enough. Once I got that offer letter, I would put in my 2 weeks notice. Normally an employee handbook would state resignation expectations. I would look into it but 2 weeks is a pretty legitimate expectation from employees. :)

I'm not sure what you mean by finishing an assignment either, but make sure you won't get written up for patient abandonment. I heard of a nurse working for an at home agency. They would not release that nurse from the position and stated they would file patient abandonment charges if they quit. This nurse got around it by refusing to renew thier license
