I could've helped if you wanted something besides epic, we are implementing Meditech w physicians in 1.5 weeks....

We don't use EPIC, we use meditech but I can tell you CPOE has been met with a ton of Resistance from Docs and the orders have NOT gotten better. They make a lot of mistakes and leave out minor orders that have to be back tracked and entered by the RN's or Sec (me). Thats about all I have for ya.

OOPs!!!!!Didn't mean to hide it, yes its for school. I'm finally getting my BSN! This is for my informatics class. I apologize if anyone thought I was trying to pull the computers over their eyes! :-)

what challenges have you seen with cpoe? Willingness to use a new system has been my biggest challenge, both nurses and physicians!

how accepting did you find the doctors to be/ how resistance was there?

So far the younger physicians have been much more accepting than the older ones. For the older ones it depends on whether they have used any other systems or not. If they have they tend to be stuck on the "aesthetics" of the other system, not the functionality.....

did it take longer to train the doctors than expected? or shorter?

No, but we haven't implemented yet (6/24), it is difficult to get them to sit more than a few mins at a time. I anticipate them needing people right there to help them when we go live.....

Have you seen an improvement in the accuracy of the orderes? Are the nurses catching errors as you would/did expect to?

Not to this point yet. But the only thing I expect to see is increased legibility :)

What safety precautions are in place for high risk medications or high risk procedures?

Meditech has all this built in. Most of it happens in the background, but it will give warnings which can be overridden. I already see the nurses starting to ignore the warnings though....

How do you see the future of informatics in this hospital?

I see many things happening in our hospital.... We implemented the inpatient and preop/pacu's documentation about 2 weeks ago. We already have radiology, laboratory using the system. Admitting has been using it for years. Medical records uses it and it will be expanding as we bring more departments on board. We will have nursing to start scanning documents in September, and by this time next year bringing OR into the mix, bringing more physicians on with their ordering and also starting the physician documentation.....

Are all the systems integrated now? Are the plans to fully integrate in place?

All departments are integrated.... We are working w outside vendors...

What would you like to see changed? in the field? on the floor?

Just some of the attitudes. However I have built most of it, so I am pretty happy with it. I do wish that Meditech was a bit more consistent across all modules

How did you come to pick Meditech?

They had this at the hospital originally, they finally decided to just expand upon what they had to begin with....

Thank you for taking the time!!!!! Interesting to see the nurses already ignoring the warning, do you think its justified, I mean , are the warnings accurate ?

Well, I think they ignore it because some of the regulatory stuff has caused a lot of duplication. Because we cannot have range doses or times (morphine 2-5mg q4-6hrs prn) we have had to force the issue with the computer system. This causes a LOT of duplications and therefore warnings. I see them ignoring them and it has only been 2 weeks....

I also see how incredibly transparent the system has made all of the departments. We have discovered MANY mistakes that would've been missed in the past. In the end though, most are very happy with it and I'm glad we are with Meditech vs other systems. As much of a pain it is on the backside (building it), it makes it great on the front side (user side) :)
