consumer applications

by Noxi

Hello all,

I was wondering if any nurse informaticists here have worked on any personal health care based projects? As in applications that people can use at home to track health data, etc. It seems that there must be a need for RNs with clinical experience to act as consultants and such. Anybody do this? Thanks!

You find a lot of nurses working for electronic med record firms. I haven't heard of anyone striking out on her own.

Hi starbuck (!) thanks for your reply. I have a keen interest in healthcare + technology and am exploring the options for RNs

Since it appears you're already in the field, I have a quick question if you would humor me. Is it beneficial to get certified in medical/hospital coding -- or do nursing informaticists working on EMRs typically not get involved with that
thanks!

Informatics Nurses have knowledge of nomenclatures, coding systems (one example: ICD-9) and vocabularies but they have no need to be certified in coding. This is a function of a medical records/HIM professional not a health/nursing or medical informatics professional. You may be confusing HIM with HIS/HIT.

Thanks - good to know. I was just wondering if medical coding would look good on a resume basically, doesn't sound necessary which is nice to hear
