Finding local nursing informatics groups
Thanks for the info! The topic for the Feb26 presentation sounds interesting, I just joined the PSNI listserv to keep up with future programs. Is 'Patient Centered Technologies' another term for applications like epic? Or would that refer to something along the lines of healthvault or google health

Finding local nursing informatics groups
I have seen multiple posts with suggestions to join local nursing informatics groups in order to learn about the field of NI and network. I live in Seattle and have searched online but only found national organizations. How do you find the locals? I am a BSN/RN with 4 years acute care experience and have developed a real passion for improving the usability of software for RNs.

Does staff use transfer belts?
We used them all the time in the last hospital i worked at.. each patient that PT worked with (the ones who needed them anyway!) got a belt that stayed in the room. Thinking back to the LTC i worked at as an aid during school tho... no belts anywhere

consumer applications
Thanks - good to know. I was just wondering if medical coding would look good on a resume basically, doesn't sound necessary which is nice to hear

New Report: Equipped for Efficiency: Improving Nursing Care Through Technology
Fabulous article, thanks for posting. I have never seen a hospital with an interactive patient system - I think that is genius and I would love to see it in action. Even just the ability for a patient to press a button to request a blanket, water -- seems like the system would pay for itself in amt time/money saved :) And it would be a great way for patients to look up health information and have other activity options besides staring at the television all day

consumer applications
Hi starbuck (!) thanks for your reply. I have a keen interest in healthcare + technology and am exploring the options for RNs Since it appears you're already in the field, I have a quick question if you would humor me. Is it beneficial to get certified in medical/hospital coding -- or do nursing informaticists working on EMRs typically not get involved with that thanks!

consumer applications
Hello all, I was wondering if any nurse informaticists here have worked on any personal health care based projects? As in applications that people can use at home to track health data, etc. It seems that there must be a need for RNs with clinical experience to act as consultants and such. Anybody do this? Thanks!

WAY COOL - The VA Chief Nursing Informatics Officer
That is an amazing title; and what an important position. Whoever gets this will certainly have national effects on the way our country handles health information with technology. Especially since the VA's systems are all linked - very cool position indeed!

Agencies that do lots of contracts in NC (RTP area)
Thanks for the quick reply, I just figured out that I'm not allowed to PM until I've produced 15 posts.. Can you PM me by chance? (sorry I"m kind of a noob with posting/PMing despite being a longtime lurker)

Agencies that do lots of contracts in NC (RTP area)
Hi all - does anyone work/travel in the RTP area? I'm a NC native who has been living as a Seattle transplant for the last 5 years. I'm trying to find a travel contract in Raleigh NC (or nearby) for this winter to be near my family. My current agency is having trouble finding a contract for me. My question is, what are the "most popular" agencies with local hospitals? Any one or two agencies that seem to have a monopoly on the contracts? I don't care about the pay, I just want a contract! To my credit I did a pretty extensive search through the archives here, and couldn't find anything region-specific for NC. Big thanks for any help

Per Diem versus Part Time
Thanks to everybody for their help and insight!! Its invaluable to me. Based on what I've heard here I think I'm going to look into applying for Per Diem at 2 different hospitals. I'll see what the nurse recruiters have to say. I've got my benefits figured out and I'm pretty good at living "on-the-cheap", but I can't have too many scary zero paychecks :) Really craving that flexibility. If it doesn't work out my next move will be part time. Thanks again! This helped so much! Cheers and have an excellent day
