Volunteer Nurses: Counted as a Work Experience?

I know a lot of Nurses in the Philippines are doing volunteer works just to satisfy the Nursing Board's requirements in their country of destination.

In relation to this, i've known a friend who is a nurse in the philippines who told me that the PNA will Ban volunteer nurses from the hospital or any facilities...

In the State of Victoria, Australia, volunteer work experience is not accepted as a work experience, unless you are in a registered capacity while doing it.

How about in other countries are they going to count it? and the Banning of volunteer nurses by the PNA, do you think this could help? what would be the solution for this?

i just wanna share my story:

i was a trainee for a well-known government hospital in the Philippines. The training has a fee. Anyway, to cut the story short, i heard one of the head nurse in one ward since she lacks staff in her ward, she was asking additional employees for her ward. I just like to tell you that staff nurses here also do their job unlike in those stories that i have read. one of the nursing administrators told her to count the staff nurses and the "trainees" as the workforce of that ward. so it just shows that if not for the trainees, they will need employees for that ward. Tsk tsk... actually there's no oversupply of nurses. The hospitals are understaff, overworked and underpaid. why not hire us nurses to ensure good quality health service is given to the people in need? *sigh*

Yeah! the supply obviously exceeds the demand but for hospitals the case was still the same, it's not the nurse's fault it's the hospitals' fault...

Oopss.. did i convey a wrong message here? I never said that it's the nurses' fault.

Let me also correct myself from one of my statements. "The hospitals are understaff, overworked and underpaid." It should be the hospitals are understaff. The nurses are overworked and underpaid.

In my opinion, there's no oversupply. If you would want to give the best quality care to your patients, there should be an implemented nurse-patient ratio (depending on the severity of cases) here. You'll see how much staff they actually need in the hospitals especially in the government/public hospitals. 1 nurse: 20-25 patients... oh well...

I've been working as a nurse trainee for 8 months now, and I would be very disappointment if employers don't consider this as a work experience. As a trainee, we get to experience almost all the tasks that a regular staff nurse gets to do. We administer medications, take vital signs, accomplish charts, do nursing rounds and endorsements, render bedside care, organize ward classes, and much, MUCH more. We are actually far more hands-on compared to the staff nurses, or even the nursing aides for that matter! If only they knew how hard-core machines we are...

The DOLE, PRC and BoN made an official statement about this issue.. They made it clear that foreign countries/employers require "ACTUAL NURSING ENGAGEMENT OR WORKING EXPERIENCES" in hiring nurses for their health care needs. And that "volunteer services/experiences" are not considered as such no matter how long they are undertaken.
