Operating room tech/LPN wages in Canada?

I've been reading here and there that LPN's working in the O.R. (Saskatoon, Regina. SK) (with the perioperative nursing course from SIAST) are making $30/hr ?? Is that true?? Or is that the max pay scale after xx number of years?? As far as I know.. LPN's are still stuck in the CUPE union in SK, and max out at 25$/hr??

Would be nice to hear a response from an LPN working in the O.R. to confirm. I personally reside in Dauphin, MB right now, working at full-scope(all RN duties are literally the same as LPN in my hospital). I hang blood, do IV insertion/therapy, narcs, central line/PICC management, charge duties, Doctors' rounds.

Only the wage is quite sad at $24.52/hr for my 2nd year of nursing. And with the Manitoba Nurses' Union, we LPN's only max out at 29.05/hr after 6 flippin years' of work... >_

Since no one is replying to my topic yet, I take it that nobody really knows.. So I did a little more searching on google.. and found this link:

On there as of 2007 per SAHO, it states that Operating Room Technician/LPN makes their salary per 3 steps.

Step 1: 30.36 / Step 2: 31.42 / Step 3: 32.52 (as of 2007)

Now I'm not too sure if that really interprets to hourly wage, but I'm pretty sure it does. Correct me if I am wrong.

So in order to become an Operating Room Tech/LPN, do I just need the Perioperative Nursing LPN program which is being offered at SIAST? (that is what my co-workers and other OR nurses have been implying to me)

This isn't a chat room and most of us work, so sometimes you have to wait for an answer.

Yup you need to take the perioperative nursing course and do the practical time to become an ORT/LPN.

I know that here in AB, you take the course and then work 52 preceptored shifts in the OR and then if your work is up to standard, you obtain the ORT designation. For us in Alberta, the ORT tag is worth about a $/hour on top of the LPN wage.

And what are the pay scale rates for LPN's in Alberta?? Last I heard or looked up Alberta, I read that they start out at 17$/hr. So they wouldn't be over 20$/hr yet? Or did they negotiate a new contract?

You are a couple of contracts behind. Starting PN rate is over $21/hour with an increase coming on April 1st.

Are LPN's part of AUPE?? I'm on the website and cannot find any salary range information. Or are they in a different union altogether?

Wow, RPN wages in Alberta SUCK! LOL for the lack of a better word! Move to Ontario. RPN's are loving their wages over here.

In Alberta, an RPN is a registered psychiatric nurse and they make the same as an RN.

Learn your terminology.

From what we hear out west, your health service is in just as bad shape as ours and work is hard to find.

Woah, no need to have an attitude! Just making innocent humour. An RPN here is a registered practical nurse.

I'm a new-grad, full-time new grad incentive at $27/hour. $30 on weekends or night shifts. Working in Toronto, ON.

Work is NOT at all hard to find here. Our new-grad employment rate is 92%. My clinical graduating class was a class of 15 of us, and each one of us had a job lined up before graduation, and were all working full-time right now. A few of us actually have two jobs, for that extra money. The RPN job market out here is excellent.

Hello,

I am a nursing student in Niagara Falls about to consolidate in Jan/Feb and then am off to take the Operating Technician Course. My two questions are this, what is the possible wages to start as a new nurse, compared to upgrading my knowledge to the ORT course. And my second question is this, does anyone know of any colleges to take the course inclass instead of online which is what is offered at Mohawk College, Hamilton, ON.

OK, you need to know your union contracts.

ORTs (at least in AB) are covered by same contract as the LPNs because they are LPNs. The specialty designation is only worth a $ and change/hour extra.

Pretty much every ORT programme is on-line or self study because the educational institutes would have a hard time find enough students at the same time to make the course economically viable.
