The government will find any and every excuse not to hire. They haven't been hiring in AB since 2012, longer everywhere else.

I just shake my head. It's always something.

My manager says they expect to be informed soon about the details of the hiring freeze, but expect it to be more extreme than the hiring freezes of the last few years. I have heard that already employed casuals in Calgary aren't getting work because programs are no longer "augmenting" with casuals and are just covering sick calls.

Many programs don't even bother replacing sick calls when budgets are tight. That's been standard practice for years.

Hello, thank you for this post.I am just wondering what this means for those of us graduating this year.Does this mean it will be harder to land a position in Alberta and that casual nursing jobs will now be hard to come by?I currently live in Edmonton by the way.

No it means there will be less full time positions and more casual.

But dont worry you will still be in the system.

I just checked convent health and alberta health n there are tons of jobs.

Positions can be posted but not filled. Don't assume that just because there are vacancies posted that there will be people hired for them. There are quite a number of temporary positions which are not mat leave or long-term disability coverage positions, but literally "just for now". There are also quite a few casual positions, which by definition are not really positions. No guarantees of anything... And for every posting you see there will be dozens of qualified applicants.

This is so discouraging, yet so true and exactly what I am seeing on the unit. I am Refreshing right now and near finished, just the last stint which is an in-hospital Preceptorship -- the burn out, lack of respect for the frontline people, the push to get patients discharged as quickly as possible, and WAY too many managers for every little "thing." Why am I Refreshing again??? Lol.
