Jobs in Toronto and Canada in general

World Canada

Published

Hello,

I ran into a couple visiting here in the states that were from Toronto and I asked them about nursing jobs in Toronto and Canada in general. They said that Canada needed nurses? Is this true? If so, since I am an American how would it work? I assume I would have to apply for a visa and whatnot. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

As I get older I wouldn't mind a universal system, however I really don't trust any of our politicians to set something up like that. Besides, we have around 400 million residents and growing, thats huge for a universal system.

What's the job outlook like Manitoba, Saskatchewan or elsewhere other than BC and Ontario?

I dunno...I live in Hamilton, ON and just graduated 3 weeks ago...a lot of my classmates have already gotten jobs and I already have a few interviews. It may be saturated in some areas, but the Hamilton area is looking OK from here *shrug*

It's even worse for experienced Nurses because we are too expensive.

If you have no experience, you will be able to get a job in the GTA. It's toughest on senior staff because the salary is much higher than they have to pay new RN's.

Same for senior LPN;

Quebec is currently making it easier for internationally educated nurses to immigrate there -- that's the only province that I've heard is recruiting. It's very, very difficult to get a job in Toronto, even for experienced Canadian nurses.

Don't even bother with Quebec. Unless you are fluent in French you will have a very hard time passing the French exam. When I did it waaay back when, it was easy. Now it's extremely difficult.

And it's true...the need for nurses is desperate but no one is hiring.

Yesterday, I was reading that AB forecasts a shortage of 5000+ nurses within the next 10 years. Same story everywhere. Everyone is deperately short, yet the cutbacks continue. The areas that are hiring are rural and remote, which are not suitable for everyone.

Forget about jobs in the cities, unless you don't mind casual and temp. OR, ER, ICU and community care are the areas in demand. Hospital based work will continue to disappear. Those are the current trends that will continue. As for Quebec, the pay is also on par with nursing aides in other areas of the country. Very low pay for licensed staff.

Going to the US? Their economy is worse than Canada, and the working conditions in most states are not stable.
