Hey there,

As my title says I'm a Canadian RN who has been working in the USA for about 10 years in an ICU setting. I'm considering returning home to Ontario to live and work....

my question is when i look for ICU jobs they mostly want people with

1. experience (which i have)

2. a Critical Care Cert.....

the question is...would the certificate really be needed seeing as i have over 10 years experience. Would i considered as an applicant for an ICU position in Ontario without it?

Would CCRN cert. help at all if they really wouldn't consider me for an ICU position without an Ontario college Certificate?

The Critical Care Certificate is pretty much standard to work in the ICU any where I have seen.

You said in your original post that they are asking for it. If they ask for it then yes, it is required. They wouldn't ask for it if it wasn't a requirement.I know of at least three hospitals near me that require it.

okay thanks for the input. Guess i wont be moving home anytime soon then. :(

or if i do it wont be into hands on care.

Why don't you just get the certificate? You can even do it online.

It takes a year...i have over 10 years exp already in ICU and have a great job that i love in the USA...i am looking into a distance program for it from Durham college, and it seems Markham Stouffville might not require it to start but ....it's always seemed a bigger challenge to find a good FULL time job in Ontario, yet they claim there is a nursing shortage (and has been since before i left for the USA)....

I have no problems getting a certificate, but i dont think i could work on the floors again....so my mind isn't made up about going home. :(

Agree with Lori. Regardless of your experience, they all require the certification to back it up. It's very unlikely you will be hired without it.

Why don't you find a course and enroll? Even if you're halfway through, you would be considered for interviews.

And we need nurses desperately, but there is no shortage. Every Province continues to cut back. Same old story. They never learn.
