Anybody from Kelowna, BC here?

I am an RN living in Ontario. My wife and I are considering moving to Kelowna. There are many reasons why, partly because we lived in Calgary for 2 years after I finished university and loved the west. We moved back to Ontario, and are living in the Country, and hate it.

We would like to move to a city, but not a huge one. I would like to work in a good sized hospital as well.

Just wondering how the hospital is to work in, in Kelowna. How are housing prices, are there many full-time jobs?

Hello I am a fellow Canadian Nurse,

I just recently moved from Kamloops, B.C.(which is a 2 hour drive from Kelowna) Kelowna is a beautiful city with lots to do in the summer with the Okanagan lake and in the winter with Big White. I have heard that there are more job opportunities in Kamloops, but of course, I am sure there are full time jobs in Kelowna. They also are the center of the new health region and because of this get more money for health improvements. As far as real estate goes most nice family homes are in the low 200's, on the other hand Kamloops is about 20 thousand dollars cheaper for the same home. Good luck on your job search!!! We moved down to California to try travel nursing for a while and are enjoying it so far, but we did enjoy working and living in Kamloops for over five years. It has all the amenities of a big city but with a small town feel.

I have lived in the okanagan all my life. Used to live in Kelowna, and now live in Vernon, about 45 minutes north. Kelowna has no full time positions, ( we are all one interior health region) nor does Vernon. Of course there are casual positions, but who wants to live and breathe by the ring of a phone. There is no nursing shortage, there are job shortages. I wish the general public new that. Houses In Kelowna are about 30 to 40 thousand more than in Vernon. Some nurses live in Vernon, and drive to Kelowna. (vs). Go to the website of Interior Health, and see what comes up. Hope this helps.

I moved to Kelowna in 2007 from New Brunswick. We lived in a 1085 sq. ft condo , and now moved to a duplex in West Kelowna. We LOVE west kelowna sooooo much more. We find it more family orientated and less crime/street people. The nature here is AMAZING. We can see the mountains from our living room window, and the lake we can see from just down the street. There are a million parks everywhere and soooo much to do outdoors. Although, it does get EXTREMELY hot here. Last summer there were days that it was +45. But it's a dry heat, not muggy at all. Housing is soooo expensive here. Our condo was $285,000. But it was in the middle of Kelowna in a great location. Our duplex in West Kelowna was $256,000 and is about 1800 sq. ft, amazing back yard, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, old but nicely updated. It definetly takes some searching. We have a wonderful realtor names Brad Bredin. (http://www.bradbredin.com). Now for jobs, Kelowna General Hospital currently doesn't have any full-times, I actually got bumped from my position and am on mat leave, so when i return to work, I have to bump someone else. It is because they closed beds in rehab, so that nurse lost her position, and she took mine. But if you go casual, you can pick up temporary positions, and it wont be long before you have your own position. The money is pretty good. The shift differentials are awesome. And overtime is double time. The hospital kinda sucks tho, compared to what I'm used to. It took me a lot of getting used to, but I learned to love it. They are in the process of adding a huge section to the hospital, so it does have potential. Kelowna grew too fast, and the hospital wasn't keeping up... lots of hallway patients, overcapacity in the ER, lots of patients awaiting placement, etc. All in all, I am glad I moved here. We seriously got ZERO snow this winter. But if you miss the snow, you can go up to Big White. There are so many little towns to visit around here that are so much fun! If road trips are your thing. Hope the move goes well!

Any info on kelowna's RN union? what is the pay scale like? is there any chance pay will come in line with Saskatchewan?
