You know you've been a nursing student too long when...

  1. You know you've been a nursing student too long when:

    1) When you're referencing books for your APA paper, and you need to type the Publishing Company (eg. Mosby or Lippincott), you don't even have to look at the city in which it's been published in because you've typed it so many times! For example, St. Louis: Mosby, or Philadelphia: Lippincott.

    2) The muslces in your arms and shoulders are getting defined just because of the amount of books you have to carry!

You know you've been a nursing student for too long when:

You know exactly what they're talking about on ER.

As first year nursing students, my friends and I have shortened it to "You know you're a nursing student when...."

You discuss dissection over breakfast. (And don't think twice about it!)

You're out of Tylenol and cough syrup because everyone in your dorm who knows you're a nursing student comes to you when they're sick. (We've only had one nursing course! We dont know anything yet!)

When you find out someone is sick, you immediately run to your books to find out EXACTLY what the problem is!

-You secretly hope your pt's blood sugar is just high enough on that sliding scale for you to practice another injection.
-You and your study partners LIKE to practice starting IVs on each other.
-You get REALLY excited when you see a patient with nice big veins that needs labs drawn.
-You have dreams at night about being in clinical (for a week in a row).
-You carry flashcards with you EVERYWHERE.
-Your kids ASK to hear weird things that happened at the hospital today.
-You can think of SEVERAL nursing Dx that apply to yourself.
-You've diagnosed yourself throughout school with whatever ailment you happen to be studying at the time.
-You're on a nursing web site at 1:00 in the morning on a Friday night (I really should be studying!)

The only clothes in your laundry basket are white uniforms and those hideous pentifores. I wonder if i can ever still wear my street clothes?

you can't go to the restroom without assessing whatever comes out of your body for size, color, smell, odor and other features, wondering where to chart it, thinking about the proper nsg dx to go along with it, plan how to fix it, implement the changes, and evaluate the results

even when there is nothing wrong with what came out of your body

Your kindergarten son, when asked, "What do you love about your mom?", he says "She knows what a human brain feels like".

When you're studying neuro with your friend susan you ask, "What do you do when an epilptic has a seizure in the bathtub?"
She thinks about it and says, "I don't know".
You say, "You throw in your laundry."
She thinks about it and says, "That makes sense because it would absorb the water and cushion the head".
    And you laugh.

    I miss Susan! lolol

...that's a horrible joke...but the nursing school twist is excellent!!!

I apologize here for the epileptic joke. It was in poor taste. However, when you've been in nursing school long enough, having poor taste can be what keeps you going. Especially when you're running on three hours of sleep each night, constant stress, etc... We've all been there. Sometimes you just gotta laugh, or you'd cry.
