Will they revoke my offer?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I'm feeling a little stressed out and need some opinions.

Earlier today I received a job offer for a local hospital (yay!!). After receiving some of the required job paperwork I was reading over it and it mentioned that part of the job requirement is that if you are responsible for driving a company vehicle you are required to have an active, valid driver's license. I am not quite sure when this would occur because I am hired as a floor nurse, but perhaps in an emergency situation this would happen?

The issue is that I currently do not have a driver's license - it is not suspended or anything I have just began to learn this year and have yet to take the driving exam, which is scheduled next month.

I have worked for over 10 years at my previous job, attended nursing school and clinical, and completed my senior practicum without any issue - always early, never missed a class or clinical day.

I am so worried that once I explain that I am not currently licensed they will revoke the job offer. My driver's exam is scheduled early next month and orientation is the following week. The position will began as a graduate nurse and then in mid-August the hospital residency will start.

I knew that driving would be important but did not realize it was an actual job requirement (it was not mentioned in the initial job description or mentioned when interviewing).

Do you think that if I explain that I am not currently a licensed driver but will be before the position begins they may work with me in this or is it more than likely the job offer will be revoked because I do not meet the requirements?

Thank you!

Usually those provisions are in for people who are driving as part of the job (ie: home health nurses). The paperwork clearly says for those with company cars (ie: a car provided by the hospital) so Since they are not giving you a company car that does not apply to you.

That is what I was thinking initially to, but after re-reading the contract again I am still unsure. :( This is what my contract states:

I acknowledge that operating a motor vehicle is part of my job responsibilities and that I may be asked to drive a fleet vehicle or use my own personal vehicle for (Hospital Name) business.

* As part of my job duties I am required to maintain a valid and unrestricted driver's license for the state in which I reside.

Why don't you call them and ask them? It sounds like a blanket contract that they have all employees sign whether you'll be driving a company car or not.

Sounds like HR gave a blanket contract in error, HR should remove the information about driving license requirement because it is not applicable to your position.

No worries. The drivers' license requirement would only apply if your position required driving anywhere as part of your job description. I can't imagine any scenario where a floor nurse is required to drive a company vehicle, or even your own vehicle as part of the job. I am thinking that this clause in in everybody's contract even though there are very few positions where it might actually apply.
