Where are new grads being hired right now?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I would like to get an idea of whats happening with new grads across the country. Where are new grads actually being hired? What are the stats on the new grad programs (how many apply for how many postions, etc.) Please share what you know about your state/region on the new grad outlook.

Here in Denver CO it's down right depressing. They want EXPERIENCE only. A lot of jobs say up front "Not accepting new grads" One health care system had a job fair yesterday and they asked all the nurses present if they were a new grad, then to all the new grads they said "we don't have any current openings, check our website, and have some refreshments on your way out" Nice right?? Even LTC is asking for experience. I feel like I wasted a whole lot of time and a whole lot of money on a degree that's not worth diddly. So FRUSTRATING!

Columbus Ohio. No new grads. Everyone wants experience.

If you live in Columbus and know somewhere that is hiring new grads, pray tell.

I am in Cincinnati and I know we have jobs down here! They are by no means easy to get, but better than what I am been told about the Columbus RN positions.

Where at in Cincinatti? I am striking out here in central Kentucky and broadening my range. I would to be at Cincinnati Children's but I am a new grad with an ADN and a non-nursing BS.

I also live in the Sac area.

My recommendation would be to look to the remote rural hospitals and start cold-calling in addition to checking the websites.

I know a number of examples of people starting their careers in the little hospitals and then getting hired back into the biggies after some years of experience.

As you well recognize, the Stanford/UCSF/John Muir/UCD kinds of places are ultra-competitive and you'd be foolish to put all your eggs in one of those tier-1, tier-2 baskets... be willing to go as far out (and down) as you need to in order to start garnering experience.

That's some sound advice. Can you give me some examples of rural hospitals in the sac region? I know there's Tahoe, woodland, Stockton...what else is there? thanks!

None of those are rural insofar as population and those hospitals have money and no difficulty finding nurses (I know, Stockton... blech).

I could give you some specific places but would prefer to handle that offline. Really, though, all you need to do is get a list of California hospitals and start looking for the more remote ones... ones that are off the beaten path and to where people don't generally want to move.

I even spent a couple days driving up and down I-5 and then cutting across East and West to have a look at a number of the smaller facilities.

At a micro-hospital (10-30 beds), you're more likely to be able to talk to a manager or even the DON just by walking in or calling than you would be at a larger facility.

Another way to do research: Talk to the ambulance guys/gals. They know where are all the hospitals in their area and they can usually tell you something about them.

Cops are generally in the know, too.

Thanks for all your advice!

hi, i know this is far from the topic but i appreciate if you guys know about any program for people like me who just came here in this country. I am a registered nurse in one of the states and i tried applying for jobs but I am always turned down 'cause my experience is outside the country. Am still new in this place so I would be gladly accepting your advice of a place ( lik what you mention rural areas?)thanks!

What about Texas? Philadelphia?.

I'm from Birmingham, AL. I was told by many nurses that it is difficult to get a job but I think most people (120+ people) in my class got hired. 50-60% of them were hired before graduation. I know maybe 3-4 people struggled to find job but they found it within 2 months. Well, Birmingham is super small city so I can't really compare it to other states but it's been like this with us.
