Waiting to hear from Bronx Lebanon Hospital

Greetings everyone!!!

I'm a new graduate and I interviewed for Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center on July. The nursing manager said that he liked me and that he has passed my name to their HR. He mentioned that it will take them a while for them to contact me.

My friend was told that she was hired but she hasn't heard from them yet as well.

I was just wondering what him giving my name to their HR implied and how long does it usually take them to get back to their applicants.

Thank you very much! Any help would be appreciated. It's been very tough to find a job as a new graduate. It's actually very depressing to feel this useless. Praying for the good things to me and to the other unemployed nurses having a difficult time.

That's so weird I am kind of in the same boat. I applied there and got an interview during the first week of August. They spoke to me as if I had already gotten the job, gave me a tour of the unit, briefly had me interview with someone who said they would most likely be my preceptor. Then I got an email telling me to forward all my paperwork via e-mail or come in and hand them in. After I scanned and emailed everything, I called to confirm that they got my paperwork - no answer. I sent out an email to confirm - no answer. During my interview they said that HR takes a long time to get through everything. But how about confirming with me that I had everything in or that my files opened okay? ..especially since the email they sent after my interview didn't specifically tell me what I needed, "license, registration, etc." - but what does etc. even mean? They even told me I had to take an online medication exam, which I had to pay $15 for. I also had to do some modules on another site and print out my quiz results, which I also scanned and emailed them. I have tried calling once every two weeks, but I don't want to be that annoying new grad. I just feel like i'm not sure what to think at this point getting so many mixed signals. My friend works there said 2 people on her unit who got hired in March had their interviews in Jan. I'm hoping this means that we're both still in the running for the positions we interviewed for. But since you had your interview before me they'll probably get back to you first so please keep me updated! I've been contemplating contacting HR, which I know we shouldn't do. But if you think about it that's also a waste on their part if they're almost done with the hiring process and we end up bailing on them because we found different opportunities when all they could've done was told us "yea you've got the job, we're just processing the paperwork." Yeah. Life of a new grad is really tough. Especially if you haven't gotten that one year of experience under your belt. I've been praying for that one break. :-/

What position did you apply for? I guess your process went further than mine because they didn't tell me about the exam yet. Sure i'll keep you posted. Hoping that everything falls into place with us.

Well I applied for a general position but the interview I had was for the emergency department. I know it's nuts there and trust me if I had other opportunities I would've taken them, but at this rate I'd take anything any hospital gives me. The person I interviewed with knew I was a new grad and wasn't dismissive whatsoever with it. If anything, it seemed as if the job was already mine. Do you think we should call HR? I don't want to be that annoying person, but at least let me know if I should just move on.

I also went on another interview. The person said I interviewed very well and I that my personality is great, but one look at my resume and he put it down on the desk immediately because of lack of experience. How are we suppose to get that one year of hospital experience if no hospital will even give us a chance. I was also looking at per diem jobs that those require experience, some even more, than full time jobs. If we apply to nursing homes and out patient clinics, how does that help because they're not considered experience if they aren't hospitals. Gah nursing school was so rough enough as it was, the nclex was just evil, and now the obstacle of finding a job lol it never ends!

By the way, which position did you apply for?

I applied for both but got interviewed for the emergency department. I have the same feelings. Right now, I don't really care how much of a load I'll get or how crazy the job will be as long as I get started with something.

Mmm. I'm not sure. I don't even know the contact information for HR hahah! Do whatever feels right for you? Yeah, at this point I just really want to know if I got it or not because it's always been at the back of my mind.

What's the second place you interviewed for? I know, I've been slowly getting depressed because of all the rejection. I really don't know what to do anymore.

My new grad friend that lives in VA got hired at a heart hospital recently. She said she went to a hiring fair? or a job fair? Do you know any that's coming up soon?

At this point, sad to say, but my gut makes me feel like we're both out of the running already. Maybe someone with experience got the job. Oh well, nothing we can do about it =(.

There are job expos, the soonest one i found in NY is in October --> job fair

But I feel like some expos don't give new grads a chance either. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I applied and got an interview from my friend at the NICU, but because of no experience, even with the hookup, I didn't get the job.

I feel like I should get a part-time job babysitting or in retail or something in the meantime. I feel like I just sit at home all day waiting for my phone to ring.

NICU at Bronx Leb as well?

Might as well go and see. We never know what kind of job opportunities they'll have new grads like us. They tell me that some clinics or hospitals like new grads because they are always eager to work and they could mold them to the nurses they want them to be.

I know. Me too :-/ I feel SO useless here. Sometimes I even consider moving to a different state? Have you tried applying for hospitals upstate NY?

But yea I have applied to hospitals upstate and still no luck. But I actually have considered it, but all my family and friends have been telling me to wait it out at least 6 months. I'm so impatient though I'm not sure if I can wait that long, jobless.

At least you got interviewed right? That's something.

My feelings exactly. I don't like the feeling of waiting around the house. It's about luck too I guess? Sometimes I wonder if it's my resume that needs fixing. :(

Do you have a plan B just in case nothing happens after six months?

Sorry, I just feel like nobody else knows what new grad nurses are going through except other new grad nurses. So, it's kind of nice to hear from someone who's going through the same situation.

No you're most certainly right! At least we've gotten interviews and have the feel of what they ask. And yea half of it is luck, or a lot of it is luck lol.

And don't apologize because it is nice to talk to someone thats in the same boat. A lot of the threads say to work as a CNA or volunteer while waiting but a lot of people told me that that's not really a great idea because it's confusing to employers. They'll wonder why you have your license but you back track and land a job as a CNA. Also, being a CNA you have to commit, so if you do get an opening as an RN somewhere you can't just quit, especially if you're hired at a hospital.

My plan B is to get my license in another state or if worse comes to worse maybe look for outpatient jobs at different facilities. It just sucks because getting your license in another state is like $200+ and you'll have to wait another few months to get your license number.

As for fixing our resume. There's nothing we can do to make it better, other than get experience. It sucks that the majority of my resume is just clinical experience and retail work, but theres nothing else we can do about it. Anyways let me know if anything opens up and I will too! Everyone says to enjoy not working yet, I guess we have no other choice but to do that!

A lot of luck indeed! May be we need to look for a bouquet of 4 leaf clovers hahah! Oh well, they say that when you feel like giving up and things get too difficult to handle. Success is right around the corner so don't give up.

Definitely! Things should look up for us in time. Good luck and we'll get through this. We'll probably look back and remember this when we're both kicking butts as RN's in hospitals ;)

So, my mom offered to let me file for dual reciprocity in another state. I think I'm going to start the paperwork from there and try to start applying to other hospitals from there and let them know I'm in the process of getting my license in that state. Hopefully I'll have better luck, we shall see!
