NY State RN Applying for Out of State Jobs

Hi All Nurses!

I've been using this board all through nursing school and it's been such a help but now I've graduated (January 2014) and got my license (March 2014) here in New York and I need some more specific advice.

I've got an AAS in Nursing (with previous BA and MSc in Anthropology which doesn't seem to matter much in the Job Search) and a NYS license. I live in Manhattan but the job market here is saturated. I have been told (at a workforce development center) that the only jobs available for a new grad are a handful of nursing home jobs which require you to do an IV insertion course ($225) before they will even interview you (nevermind having a firm job offer). I'm willing to do what it takes and have been networking like crazy as well as looking further and further afield in New York State. The responses I have gotten from places like Rochester have been that they are focusing on more local candidates. I'm considering applying to places that have serious shortages like North Dakota.

All the job listings I see stipulate that you need an active license in that state to apply so my question to those who have relocated out of state for a job is: did you apply for verification of your license in another state before even applying/having a firm job offer? I'm really weary of jobs that require you to shell out more money just to get your foot in the door without any promises. If I decide to apply all over the country, this will cost so much in fees! Has anyone done this with success from NYS? Was it worth it? (NYS is not part of the licensure compact).
