Has anyone dealt with mistreatment to your students? Have you filled out an incident report on one of the staff at your clinical site? I am wondering how the best way to handle it. I can't stand back and allow it to happen. I am almost ready to quit my job over it.

Any advise on how to handle bullying of your students by the facility staff?

Nurse Bullying and Hazing - The Truth About Nurse Culture

Not a very professional magazine but it describes the culture of staff at some places.

I've found from traveling around most places have an anti horizontal violence policy and/or harassment policy that contains anti horizontal violence content. Have you spoken with the nurses and charge rn at the facility? What about a clinical liaison or unit educator about the problem? Bullying does not toughen up students. It only makes them afraid to ask question. It's immature and counterproductive. I'm glad your students have you to stick up for them.

I had this come up a few weeks ago, and this is what I did and it turned out okay.

One of my students verbalized frustrations with a staff nurse being hostile to her and expecting her to do things beyond her scope. I approached the nurse and asked her if she understood the student's role and limitations. The nurse refused to have a discussion, and walked away. I then went to the team leader and relayed my concerns. She heard me out, expressed that the nurse was new to the floor and probably wasn't ready for a student. For the rest of the quarter none of my students were assigned to that nurse.

Had the team leader not been receptive, I was ready to go to the unit manager.

We also discuss bullying and lateral/horizontal violence in the classroom. We coach the students to resist bullying and turn to instructors if they think its happening, so that we show them how to stand up to it and hopefully break the cycle.
