Hi, I work as an educator/nurse recruiter and I was wondering if anyone has some input for establishing a new med test. The one I use for new hires is outdated. Any ideas? Thank you

welcome to the nursing educators forum, rnpatny :balloons:

a preliminary rule is to abide by the new jcaho requirements:

no unapproved abbreviations on the test

use "ml's" not "cc's"

no apothecary lingo (drams, grains, etc.)

in order to assess critical thinking, include some "case scenario"-type questions, if possible.

require all work/ calculations be shown.

i have included a "math worksheet" we use for our second semester students. i have a sliding-scale insulin question on the worksheet (even though sliding scales are no longer recommended per the latest diabetic guidelines, many of our outlying hospitals/ clinical sites still persist in using these).

So, no more Grains?

Hi, thank you so much for the information. It will go a long way in helping me feel less frustrated and stressed, I'm sure like the rest of you I have so much on my plate and only so many hours in a day...Thanks again

Hi. I don't have any suggestions for you. I wish you good luck. I accepted a position today as the MCH unit educator at my hospital. I have been a staff nurse in the maternity unit for 9 years and worked mother-baby at another hospital for about 6 years before that. Please keep me in your thoughts as I start my new journey. I am scared and excited too. I know I will look to folks in this forum for assistance. I love allnurses.com. I have visited the ob nursing forum often over the past several years.
