What training do I need?

I am looking to get some kind of training that will assist me in getting out of bedside nursing and into something more like a desk job. I have been looking into getting some coding certifications but I am not sure that they will help me in the long run. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Thank you!

It's very smart to begin planning & taking actions to support your career growth rather than just waiting around for something to happen.

Coding expertise may increase your chances of getting a job as a clinical documentation specialist. Those jobs are focused on ensuring that documentation systems/information is efficiently tied to reimbursement & quality analysis systems. As documentation systems become more complex, these jobs are increasing in my part of the country.

What type of work interests you? Have you taken the initiative to become involved in 'extra curricular' activities that can open doors for you? Working on task forces & committees will help you become more visible to the higher-ups that can help your career. It would also provide you with a more systemic understanding of healthcare (not limited to bedside care). Take the time to investigate some jobs/roles in which you are interested. Talk to people in those jobs to find out how they made the transition and get advice for your own career. Some jobs, such as case management or informatics, may require formal certification but you may be able to move in other directions just by expressing an interest and showing that you are willing to train.
