Unsure About Nursing??

A few years ago I tried to do nursing assisting to get some experience for my future nursing career. I was newly certified. My third day working for a nursing agency, I was pressured to clean up a woman who had passed away. It made me sick to my stomach, so i had to leave the room. I had a very bad experience so now I am very undecided about actually going into nursing.

I want to be a nurse because i am a caring person and love helping people. I take pride and passion into my work. But these days I am hearing so many negative things about nursing. The only thing good that i hear about is the flexiblility, stability, and the pay. I know that if I decide to go into nursing it will not be because of the pay. So I dont know if I really should.

I'm sorry for your experience. If you decide to go into nurse, don't feel pressured and ask someone to be with you.

A lot of us get sick and nauseated at first with the "dirty" part of the job, but we just do it and do it and do it, and then we're fine.

But yes, nursing is a stressful job full of negative things. Best to know what you're getting into. Good luck.

If someone decides to go into the medical field, is it good to get a part-time job related to medical? OR is it better to work at a place different from medical so it doesnt overwhelm you or makes you change your mind about the career?

If you are a caring person and love helping people, nursing is a good fit. If you are a natural "helper", I think you will love nursing. Yes, there are all kinds of negative things, but you will be there for the right reasons. A love for science alone will not carry you through nursing school, as I am finding out the hard way.:sniff:

Don't let one bad experience make up your mind! Yes, I think it is better to work in the field. I told myself not to before NS because I thought I would possibly see things that would send me running for the wrong reasons. However, I am finding now that I am in clinicals (in NS) that maybe the reasons to run would have been the RIGHT reasons, for me atleast. If you go into the clinical aspect and you think, "I would LOVE to do this" you are meant to be there! It is one thing to be scared and unsure because you are green and another thing to be telling yourself nursing is for you when it is not. I want to accomplish SOMETHING but honestly I don't know now if nursing is it. If you love helping people and get a big rush from doing it, nursing is for you!!! You may have to get used to the rest of the crap (mean docs, nasty pts) but you will love what you do. You can't beat that!!

If you do not like working part time in the medical field, and it overwhelms you and makes you change your mind, isn't that good to change your mind BEFORE you have spent a lot of time and money? If you do not like it part time, you will really not like it full time.

Nursing is great, but I always caution people who say they want to "Help People" that nursing is a lot more than helping people. It involves the bad stuff, and dealing with difficult people-people who really don't want to be helped. You can help people in many careers (Teaching, Social Work, Counseling, etc.). All that said, there are many areas of nursing that are not very icky- such as Diabetes Educator, case management, clinic work (some clinics can be quite icky- think urology!)

I love nursing because I get to use my mind, as well as do technical things (I was always a procedure junkie), and work with people in a time of very high stress for them.
