Transitioning from BSN to MBA - Need Advice

I am a "newbie" here, but not new to nursing. I am not sure where to begin here, but here goes....

Basically, I have worked in healthcare from the bottom to where I am at now. From, nurses aid to AD RN, to BSN. After bachelors degree, I took a hiatus from academics (for 10 years) and concentrated on getting more experience as a nurse. My background is mostly in ER & Trauma Services and Case Management. Currently, I am back at the bedside as a RN in the ER dept in a very small rural hospital AND just started this past summer in a MBA program. I am going for an MBA in healthcare administration.

I am finding that this MBA program is a bit overwhelming - especially since for most of my career I never needed to do balance sheets and accounting, finance & economics stuff. Then, of course there is the challenge of mastering Excel too :lol2: However, most of the other students in my class have some of this experience at a directorship level in healthcare or have a business background. Not all but most. BUT I am determined to get through this. My goal is to eventually work as a nursing director, medical device company, or for an insurance company - something like that.

I guess I am just wondering if there are any MBA RN's out there that were or are in the same situation as I and if they have any advice, I am all ears. Some people say that an MBA is an MBA, but I want to do well. I hope this gets better with time.

I received my MBA before computers were used at home. We had to physically do our spread sheets, etc. Business plans are something that have always been required and been done, with or without a computer.

You actually are at a benefit, you can look up info on the internet, we only had large books to use, and had to spend many hours per week in the library.

Where are you going to school?

Wow - your story is similar to mine: NA to LPN to ADN to BSN to MSN. I'm now doing a post-masters clinical nurse specialist. I know the MBA is the way to go for some people. I have never cared for the accounting/business aspect of nursing. However, I certainly appreciate those that do. Good luck.

Dear Trauma RN,

Yes, it does look like we have pursued similar tracks. It is difficult right now with the business theory stuff because I am only familiar with nursing theory. So, it take a bit to soak in :) Hopefully, the accounting thing that will start up in the next month will be a bit easier... I don't know.
