Telecommute RN case manager

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone , I've been working on a MED surge unit for 10 years now and I want to move on to something more flexible since I'm a mother of 2 small children and am burning out. Does anyone know of any telecommute RN positions that are easy to get / are hiring now ?? Thanks

Reality check. If you are thinking that working from home means you can manage to fulfill the responsibilities of a full time job while simultaneously taking care of two small children, this is probably not within the realm of possibility. Some 'work at home' jobs mean that you work out of your home, but the actual work is conducted at client sites - such as record abstracting for insurance companies. Is this what you have in mind?

Employers with 'work at home' staff normally have very strict rules about job performance - with monitoring technology to make sure that the requirements are met. For instance - the 'call a nurse' companies require that you answer by the second ring, no background noise, achieve specific call outcomes within a specific time frame, etc..... and they have a supervisor who monitors the calls. There are some types of 'work at home' jobs that are only based on tasks - no client interaction - such as records examination/analysis via remote connections. These would be more possible with 2 kids because if they are flexible in terms of working hours, you can arrange it around your own schedule.

Make sure you know the payment structure. More flexible (task) jobs may be based on a 'piece work' arrangement, by which you are paid for specific tasks, but not your time or travel. Will the employer pay for equipment (dedicated phone line, internet, laptop, etc) or do you have to pay for it? Also, be sure to check with your homeowners insurance policy to see if you will need a rider to cover home office equipment (and liability if clients have to come to your home).
